It is his task, allotted to him by the supreme Lord, to see that no soul gets past a given point in inner ascent without first having attained the proper degree of purification and readiness required for further inner development. In a way, this is a positive function of a negative power. It is his duty to see to it that no unclean, unprepared soul leaves his jurisdiction.*
