It’s the All Ireland Dog Show in Roundstone this Bank Holiday Monday at 1pm.
We have skin in the game this year in the form of Betty. All challengers beware, as she has been practicing her best poses to wow the judges. So you’re in for some stiff competition!

Back in 2005, the late Steve Fossett and Mark Rebholz took 18 hours to recreate the crossing of Alcock and Brown from Newfoundland to Ballyc***eely in a replica of the original Vickers Vimy biplane.

Clifden Traditional Music Festival

Congratulations to Marie Walsh for coordinating this year’s excellent Trad Fest. There was a great buzz about the place. Our punters (locals and visitors alike) had nothing but high praise for the whole event. Well done to everyone involved!

There has been talk on the news recently regards to the problem of what happens to disposable food and beverage packaging and the impact it has on our environment. One solution that has been bandied about is adding a 25c tax on disposable coffee cups. Surely if someone is prepared to spend €3 on a skinny latte they will have no problem spending an extra few cents on a cup tax, so that's the same amount of rubbish going to landfill (or the ocean) and the government make an extra few quid in the process.
At The Chipper we go to great lengths to source biodegradable packaging, from cardboard trays and cups to forks and lids made from vegetable starch which all easily break down and can be added to the compost bin. I am in no way making this point to be preachy or self righteous. The point I'd like to make is that if a tiny business like ours is able to do this, why can't these huge multinational franchises do the same. I can appreciate that plastic is much cheaper but maybe they could all use some of the money they save through dubious tax avoidance practices and invest some of it back into protecting our environment.
