HOMEMADE SODA BREAD

Ireland’s most famous bread, easy to make and on the table in less than 45 minutes.

250g plain white flour
250g wholemeal flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
400ml buttermilk

The acid in the buttermilk reacts with the bicarbonate of soda and creates the rise.

1. Put all dry ingredients in a bowl and mix well.
2. Make a well in the centre and add buttermilk, you will end up with a sticky dough.
3. Tip the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, shape it into a ball and flatten it slightly with the palm of your hand.
4. Heat your oven to 200oC/Gas 6.
5. Line a baking tray with baking parchment and lightly flour.
6. Put the dough onto the baking tray and mark into quarters with a large sharp knife cutting deeply into the dough and dust with flour.
7. Bake for 30 minutes until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the base.
8. Leave to cool on a wire rack.

Eat on the day of baking or toast it the following day.

Enjoy
