Living in a historic building has its fair share of challenges, particularly because much of your time and resources are spent on aspects that are not immediately visible.
Thus it was a sheer delight and thrill to witness a recent restoration of the front façade, unveiling its original caramel sandstone splendour.
In the 1860s, John Madden had a vision of remodelling Hilton Park which included adorning the house with sandstone sourced from near Dungannon.
Now, over 150 years later, the layers of dirt, pollution, and natural blemishes have been artfully stripped away, unveiling the house in all its original glory.
The intricate detailing of the architecture, once obscured, now stands out proudly, telling stories of the Irish craftsmanship and dedication of a bygone era. Each column and cornice, carefully restored, reflects the artistry of the past, and those hands who built it, serving as a reminder of the importance of preserving our architectural heritage.
The transformation is truly remarkable!
The restoration was made possible by part funding from the Built Heritage Investment Scheme, which we are extremely grateful to. 🙏
Built Heritage Investment Scheme funding is issued by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and administered by Monaghan County Council.
