In May 2022 we posted a link to a wonderful podcast from IECS member Conor Clear speaking with Ethical Celebrants Clara Malone of , and Dermott Langan of .celebrant about Stepping Stones Ceremonies, and Coming of Age Ceremonies.
As the IECS will be hosting a members day on Milestone Ceremonies this Autumn we thought this was a good opportunity to repost the link to the podcast
In this episode the Celebrants explore the choice available to parents and families; the benefits of involving the children in the occasions; and the importance of celebrating and encouraging children who may not want to take part in religious rites. https://www.conorclear.com/.../a-new-way-to-celebrate...
You can find a list of all our celebrants on our website. www.iecs.ie
Thanks to Conor for hosting this important discussion.

In honor of Sinéad.....
"Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal."
The above quote, which is taken from a gravestone here in Ireland somewhere, reminds us that while losing someone we love changes our lives forever, the love and the memories we hold onto means they never truly leave us.
Ceremony Ideas - A memories book
You will likely be familiar with a guest book at a wedding or condolences book at a funeral, but a 'memories' book is also a lovely inclusion to a naming day ceremony.
A simple scrapbook filled with handwritten messages and pictures from the people who came out to celebrate with the child is a beautiful and very special keepsake. Why is it so special? Because it will contain the handwriting of the guests. Our handwriting is something that is unique and not easily replicated.
Sadly, some of the people who are at a naming celebration might not also be there when the child has their next significant celebration, and so to have their handwriting is to have a little piece of them.
Ceremony Ideas - Sand Blending Ritual
A firm favourite with families, a sand blending ritual provides a lovely visual keepsake from the ceremony.
Each person has their own coloured sand, or sand taken from somewhere special to them, which is then poured into a common vessel. Once combined the sands can never again be separated.
The different colours can symbolise different characteristics, and kids especially just love this ritual. It also works well in a Naming Celebration or Milestone Ceremony. A really fun, colourful addition to your ceremony!
Here at IECS we acknowledge the importance of talking about all of life's milestones and that includes death. It may seem like a heavy conversation to have, and in many ways that is why it is so important to have it while you can, before it is too late.
A very simple way to get the conversation started is by asking the simple question...."What songs would you have at your funeral?" You never know, you might even have a giggle or two talking about it. The conversation doesn't always have to be heavy and serious, it can be practical, light hearted, sentimental. But the important thing is to have the conversation!
What song would you like played at your funeral? Tell us in the comments below...
We are getting lots of feedback from our members who are having a great time planning Milestone Ceremonies for children over the coming weeks.
These ceremonies give families the option of a non-denominational celebration, and are full of fun and lots of input from the children.
One of our members got the kids together to decorate their jars for their upcoming friendship sand ceremony. Another group got together and did a sponsored walk and raised money for a local soup kitchen! Well done to everyone involved.
If this sounds like something you would like to find out more about then do not hesitate to get in touch with our Celebrants, they are happy to answer any questions you have.

Vow renewals aren't just for those who have been married years, you can have a vow renewal anytime. We have seen many couples who got married during Covid in a small ceremony have a big vow renewal with all their friends and family.
IECS celebrants work a lot with couples from overseas who come to Ireland for a holiday and want to incorporate a vow renewal while they are here. Sometimes it is even a surprise!
Whatever your reason for renewing your vows, an IECS Celebrant can help make it a day to treasure forever.
Some beautiful words from one of our favourite poets and authors here in the IECS, the amazing Maya Angelou.
A perfect, simple reading for a wedding ceremony❤
Ceremony Idea - Oathing Stone
The Oathing Stone is an old Scottish tradition where the couple place their hands upon a stone while saying their wedding vows. This is thought to set their vows in stone.

Conor Clear, one of our IECS members has created a fabulous podcast @celebrationsessionspodcast which looks at life and the importance of marking all occasions. In his latest episode he spoke to two other IECS members Clara Malone from Coastal Ceremonies and Michael Grace of https://www.michaelgracecelebrant.ie/. They chatted about rituals and ceremony enhancements and the different options couples have to really ensure their ceremony is personal, meaningful and reflective of their personalities and beliefs. It was a really fun chat and if you are planning your ceremony or curious about the various ceremony enhancements it's definitely worth a listen. https://www.conorclear.com/podcast/episode/66e8c64a/love-meaningful-wedding-rituals #love #weddingceremonies #ethicalcelebrant #ethicalceremony #iecsofficial #ethicalculture #vowrenewals #elopements #babynamingceremonies #celebrantsinireland #microweddings #milestoneceremonies #gettingmarriedinireland #independentcelebrants #officiantsinireland #ceremonyreadings #ceremonyinspo #iecs #weddings #weddinginspo #officiants #handfasting #celtichandfasting #sandceremony #loveletters #love #ringwarming #rituals #weddingtraditions #ceremonyideas
