Thank you for a wonderful week. Next week Susan from @thevintagerosecompany will be hosting.
Hi everyone , Anne Marie (@gardendelila) here and I am delighted to be hosting the flower farmers of Ireland account this week. This is my first full year growing after a small trial season last year. I grow at home in a relatively small plot with a fairly mature garden which has a lot of foliage and I also have an allotment 10 minutes down the road. I have always loved growing and nurturing in the garden and I adore arranging the flowers that I grow. I also work part-time so it is very busy around here!!! I am currently getting beds cleared and ready for the spring. After a very busy fresh flower season I am currently starting into my dried flower season. I hope to share more on this during the week. The short video shows 2 arrangements I did with my dried flowers this weekend. Looking forward to the week ahead!! #driedflowerarrangement #everlastingflowers
I’ve been away for the weekend doing exams at @nationalorganicskillnet @antionadglas. Tomorrow some of the other flower farmers are coming for a visit- one of the joys of being a member of @flowerfarmersireland is the relationships with other flower farmers. I’m making some sourdough cinnamon rolls to share. We are open to new members year round, it’s a great organisation to be part of! @thevintagerosecompany @rustling_farm_flowers @wildandgreenflowers @ameliasgardenflowers @primalproduce @wearesowgrateful
So here are some tulips growing in crates in my ‘side’ garden. They are growing in my homemade compost. If you are concerned about the climate crisis, let me explain why buying local flowers is a great way to be sustainable. There are two aspects of the climate crisis: carbon footprint and biodiversity loss. Local flowers have a teeeny tiny carbon footprint. #zeroairmiles . And flower farmers contribute hugely to restoring biodiversity. #feedthebees . So #zeroclimateguilt when you bring that beauty into your life!
So here’s my suburban garden- the home of @bigskyflowers . The front. It’s very different to most of the homes near me because there’s no lawn. There is some grass- I grow things like brizia and canary grass , they look amazing in bouquets. But no grass that needs mowing. So really productive and rich in biodiversity. You can hear the birds and maybe the chickens? I’ll show you the back later, if you’re interested…
Hi all! It’s Carmel here from @mountalexanderflowers for my final post of the week on behalf of Flower Farmers of Ireland! 💐
Our website is currently being updated as we have lots of new members this year. This is very exciting for our association as not only are we growing in numbers, we have also widened our geographical spread.
So make sure to check us out and find a flower farmer near you to support the ever increasing demand for Irish grown seasonal flowers.
I am delighted to be handing over to one of our new members, Kathryn from @riverviewcottagegarden who will be your host next week.
I leave you with a short highlight reel of some bright and beautiful blooms from last year. 🎥
All of which were grown here at @mountalexanderflowers , with the exception of the beautiful pale pink rose which was gifted to me by the very talented Susan of @thevintagerosecompany . I had the pleasure of a field trip there last summer and came away with a bucket of roses. What a gift 🎉🌹
Soil blocking 🌱
Hello everyone, Emma here from @theflowerfairyireland.
I mentioned soil blocking in an earlier post and had quite a few questions so I said I would do a little demo.
I’m making the move to soil blocking because of it sustainability but I have also found the germination rate is much greater with the soil blocking.
The roots don’t grow around in circles as they do in modules, which they have to unlearn when you plant them out! This results in better transplant success and happier plants & flowers ultimately.
It saves plastic,space and time,so for me & the planet it’s a winner 🙌
