Creative Places Ballaghaderreen Artist-researcher Anna King has just launched her new podcast PLACEWAYS. In the first episode Anna speaks to local artist Maria May. In a very insightful and healing conversation, Anna discusses Maria's artwork with her and Maria shares her thoughts on nature, how she explores art-making to draw attention to environmental crisis while using her artwork process to acknowledge and work through grief. Make yourself a cuppa and settle in for a warm conversation.

LAWPRO (Local Access Water Programme) are hosting an event with valuable talks from community groups on their experience caring for water, and an opportunity to link up with others who are interested in this area. Its happening on Saturday the 9th of November in Athlone.

This would be a great opportunity for any group wishing to find out more about working with LAWPRO and getting support for community-led projects that want to focus on caring for water in your locality. We were lucky to have LAWPRO catchment scientist and local to Ballaghaderreen Noreen Shyrane give a presentation about water and the River Lung at our recent event 'The Cut on the Lung River'. Keep an eye out for registration for their event at www.lawaters.ie

CALL OUT: Community Consultation Creative Installation or Activity

Creative Places Ballaghaderreen welcomes submissions from artists for a community consultation creative installation or activity, as part of our final event for the R&D phase of Creative Places.

Deadline for Proposal: 3pm Friday 11th October.
Email submission to [email protected]
Event date for installation / activity: 10th November 2024.
Award: An award of €2,500 is available for one artist or divided among a group of artists, depending on proposals.

More information on the Creative Places Ballaghaderreen Commission Brief:https://www.roscommoncoco.ie/en/services/community/arts-office/creative-places-ballaghaderreen-images/briefing-document-creative-consultation-commission-2024.pdf

Commission scope and audience:
The event will be open (and free) to the public to attend. The commission should facilitate the
community of all ages, whom have been involved in the programme in some way, to reflect on
their experience. It could also facilitate conversations and data collection which considers arts programming, needs and provision in Ballaghaderreen for future. To imagine and reveal a vision of a Creative Ballaghaderreen.
For example, this could involve an interactive temporary public art piece with which the community would engage or an arts-based research activity based on some of the programme’s emerging topics/themes from the year.

Submissions should be 2 pages max. Visuals where relevant are welcomed.
The successful proposal/s will be considered by members of the project Steering Group together
with Roscommon County Council Arts Office based on the following criteria:
• Reflect on its relevance to the Creative Places R&D phase (40/100);
• Engagement with the community (40/100);
• Artist/Creative experience (20/100).

About Creative Places Ballaghaderreen
Creative Places Ballaghaderreen is a one-year Research and Development project focused on local engagement, through conversations and developing relationships with different groups, artists and individuals in the area. It involves community-focused arts research with three artist-researchers with different disciplines Dr. Anna King, Nollaig Molloy and Julie Sharkey and coordinator Mary Smyth designing a mix of targeted workshops, open events and artist meet ups. These explore local interests, inform a developing local arts and creative programme and open dialogues on what a Creative Ballaghaderreen could be. A Steering Group involving a diverse group of local committed
partners meet quarterly to consider the ongoing programme.

As we come to the end of our Creative Places Ballaghaderreen Research & Development Phase,
there will be a final open community consultation held to reflect on the conversations and activities
over the past year and consider what is next for Ballaghaderreen as a Creative Place. This event will be led by the Creative Places Artist Researchers and Coordinator.
As part of this event, we wish to commission an interactive artwork, installation or activity.

We had a great day yesterday at our rescheduled Heritage Week event ‘The Cut on the Lung River’ in Ballaghaderreen. Thank you to all those who attended and those who participated in Nollaig’s clay workshop using clay from the banks of the Lung River and those who embraced Anna’s contemplative presentation about the symbolism of water with stories from James Woods. Many thanks to Noreen Shyrane from LAWPRO (Local Access Water Programme) who provided a kick sample on the day as well as an important presentation and discussion on the water quality in the area. Thank you to local painter Conor O Connell and local writer Carol Beirne for sharing their thoughtful artistic responses on the River Lung. The event would not have been possible without farmers and landowners Christy McCann, Declan Mc Garry and Cyril O’ Connor, thanks for your openness and support, to Grace, Patricia and Anita in the Community Resource Centre in the Shambles for shelter and seating, to Arrowe for transport and set up and to Mary for traffic stewarding and continued support as Creative Places Ballaghaderreen Co-ordinator. Creative Places Ballaghaderreen is supported by Roscommon County Council and Arts Council of Ireland.
