Early Life and Martial Arts Journey
Grandmaster Joseph Edmondson began his martial arts journey at the tender age of four. From the very beginning, he understood the power of discipline, focus, and respect—values that would later become cornerstones of his own teaching philosophy. His early immersion in martial arts paved the way for a life dedicated to not only mastering various combat disciplines but also uplifting others through education, training, and mentorship. Over the decades, Joseph’s tireless dedication to his craft transformed him into a versatile and accomplished martial artist, as well as a respected leader within the global martial arts community.
Ranks and Certifications
Joseph Edmondson is recognized as a Grandmaster in Taekwondo, holding a prestigious 8th Dan Black Belt under Grandmasters Dan K. Choi and George Bell. He also holds a 2nd Dan Black Belt in Hapkido and a 4th Dan Black Belt in Krav Maga, certified by none other than GM Itay Gil, a Major in Israel’s elite IDF Yamam unit. Demonstrating his commitment to constant learning, he currently holds a Brown Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Master Royler Gracie, affiliated with Gracie Humaita.
His dedication to cross-training in multiple disciplines reflects not only a breadth of knowledge but a deep understanding of real-world application, particularly in self-defense and tactical training. Joseph has become a certified personal trainer in strength and conditioning via the International Sports and Sciences Association and is a certified instructor through the National Association of Professional Martial Artists (MATA).
Competition and Coaching Legacy
Joseph Edmondson is a seasoned competitor and champion, having claimed nine World Championship titles. His accolades include gold, silver, and bronze medals from the United States Taekwondo Union National Championships and top placements in international competitions such as the IMAC and NASKA U.S. Open World Championships. He is a 13-time Arizona State Taekwondo Champion, and his coaching achievements are just as impressive—he has trained over thirty Arizona State champions and three Junior Olympic champions.
He served as the Arizona State Coach for the USTU National and Junior Olympic sparring and forms teams. His leadership roles include Secretary General and Public Relations Director for the Arizona USTU (1999–2005), as well as Arizona State President for the World Taekwondo Union (1998–2005). His presence was also vital on the Arizona State University Taekwondo team from 2000 to 2004.
Business and Teaching Career
Grandmaster Edmondson’s impact goes beyond personal accolades. As the Owner and Operator of Next Level Fitness & Martial Arts in Gilbert, Arizona since 1995, he has built a thriving institution with over 230 active students and a dedicated staff. From 2017 to 2020, he also owned and operated America’s Best Karate in Chandler, Arizona, overseeing nearly 200 students. His earlier teaching experience includes his role as Program Director at Choi’s Taekwondo in Mesa, Arizona from 1990 to 1994.
Through his academies, Grandmaster Edmondson has inspired countless individuals—from children to corporate professionals—to embrace martial arts as a tool for personal empowerment and community growth.
Public Engagement and Media Presence
Joseph Edmondson has been an influential voice for martial arts in the media and public awareness campaigns. He has been featured on numerous television networks including ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and Good Morning America, delivering self-defense education and motivational insights. He held a bi-weekly segment on KTVK Channel 3 in Phoenix for over 200 episodes, sharing martial arts techniques and wellness strategies with a broad audience.
His visibility in the mainstream media also includes national commercials for brands like Powerbar, Budweiser, Sony, and AMC Movie Classics. He was the cover feature of Sweat Magazine in February 1998 and has written as a contributing author for several fitness and martial arts publications. His demonstrations for events such as the Phoenix Suns, Arizona Rattlers, Women’s Expo, and City of Hope's “Workout for Hope” further reflect his dynamic public engagement.
Community Leadership and Social Impact
Passionate about community safety and personal development, Joseph has led numerous r**e prevention and self-defense seminars for corporations, universities, and government organizations, including Arizona State University, Wells Fargo, Edward Jones, and Southwest Airlines. He has also worked extensively with law enforcement agencies in multiple states to improve tactical training and safety protocols for officers.
He has delivered keynote addresses and led seminars for causes such as Drug Awareness Week and Alcohol Awareness Month, always emphasizing the role of martial arts in fostering respect, self-discipline, and societal responsibility.
Recognition and Awards
Grandmaster Edmondson’s outstanding contributions have earned him a place in several prestigious Halls of Fame. He was inducted into the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2004 as Taekwondo Instructor of the Year. From 2019 to 2022, he was honored by the London International Hall of Fame, where he also served on the Board of Directors. He has also been inducted into the Action Martial Arts Hall of Fame and the Munich Hall of Honors for his lifetime dedication and excellence in the martial arts community.
