DropDstudio weddings

DropDstudio weddings I have been documenting weddings in the most relaxed way for more than a decade, working with couples who believe in storytelling wedding images.

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
Currently juggling between Bangalore, the silicon city of India, and the small but beautiful town of Siliguri in West Bengal, I have been photographing weddings for more than a decade now and in almost all corners of India. I continue to pursue my passion for photographing people and news events. I call myself a documentary wedding photographer and I use this experience to tell

the story of the wedding in a timeless, honest, and most relaxed way. My style of photography – sometimes called reportage or wedding photojournalism – means that almost all the photographs are candid and unobtrusive to a large extent. DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY:
I am presently represented by NurPhoto and regularly contribute my images for wire services. Find more about my personal body of work and documentary projects on my website. I am also the chief curator of the Instagram handle. I have worked with Print and Online Media, and have been commissioned by a few NGO’s to work on some multimedia projects. In every captured moment, our lens becomes a storyteller, weaving an enchanting narrative that goes beyond the surface, revealing the intricate threads of love, tradition, and unique details that make each wedding a cherished tale of its own.

Enchanting Bridal Moments:

Photo 1:
The first glance beneath the veil reveals a shy yet radiant bride, her face framed by cascading hair. Each detail speaks of anticipation and grace.

Photo 2:
Through the delicate veil, a canvas of mehendi adorns her fingers, telling a story of love and tradition. A bride, veiled in mystery and adorned in intricate art.

Photo 3:
A side profile captures the bride's silhouette, an exquisite blend of elegance and poise. Her journey begins, a tale written in the lines of her graceful profile.

A powerful image capturing Nishant applying Sindoor on Swaralipi's forehead, marking the end of wedding rituals and the beginning of her lifelong journey as a bride. This significant act is a poignant conclusion to their nuptial celebration.

Further Wedding Moments Revealed:

Within the spatial constraints of the venue, these images creatively unveil distinct aspects of Swaralipi and Nishant's partnership.

In the first, Nishant confidently leads, his presence commanding attention.

The second, a delightful side profile, captures a moment of support, Swaralipi finding joy and strength in Nishant's presence. We adore how the interplay of shadows elevates the atmosphere in this particular shot.

The third, standing shoulder to shoulder, symbolizes their united front, portraying their readiness to embrace diverse roles in tandem.

Despite limited space, the play with lights and framing accentuates the couple's adaptability and the dynamic roles they willingly assume for each other.

Second Glimpse of the Wedding:

We recently documented our first wedding in Siliguri since establishing our presence in this part of the country.

Amidst the enchanting winter ambiance of Siliguri, the union of Bengali bride Swaralipi and Assamese groom Nishant unfolded, creating delightful moments that symbolized the bond between individuals from different states of the country.

Here are the initial set of images from the wedding, presented in a carefully curated sequence:

Photo 1:
Caught Swaralipi off guard while she was being photographed by her friends before the first ritual of juroon.

Photo 2:
Swaralipi’s mother is captured in the midst of preparations, adorning the space just before the arrival of the groom’s family. The empty couple’s chair in the foreground adds another layer to this beautiful moment.

Photo 3:
Swaralipi is presented with gifts from Nishant's family as part of the Juroon celebration, a significant ritual in Assamese weddings. We admire how the women from Nishant's family gaze attentively at the bride, while her mother smiles with satisfaction in the background.

Photo 4:
The ladies struck a chord of profound emotion, capturing a moment of pure bliss.

Photo 5:
Rare moments are sometimes relished long after the actual event, much like the captured essence in this frame from Swaralipi's Juroon celebration.

Photo 6:
The hug between Swaralipi's mother and Nishant's mother symbolized a new bond forming between the two families. Juroon, a pivotal ceremony in Assamese weddings, signifies the exchange of gifts between the bride's and groom's families. This ritual fosters the spirit of unity and goodwill, symbolizing the acceptance and integration of the bride into her new family. As cherished items are exchanged, the ceremony becomes a heartfelt expression of joy and a promise of shared happiness in the journey ahead. The Juroon celebration is not only a tradition but also a beautiful moment that strengthens the bonds between two families coming together in celebration of love and union.

Photo 7:
Swaralipi's portrait captures a beautiful mood. The simplicity of diffused lighting, accompanied by a subtle hint of shadow, adds a significant touch to the photo. Every element contributes to the beauty of this portrait, celebrating the simplicity of a fleeting moment in time.

Photo 8:
Capturing intercultural marriages is a delight as it showcases the best of both worlds. In this shot, Nishant, an Assamese groom, actively participates in a Bengali ritual. The wide-angle frame not only emphasizes the significance of the moment but also beautifully encapsulates the grandeur of the occasion.

Photo 9:
In Assamese culture, particularly during the Juroon celebration in weddings, the fish holds cultural and symbolic significance. The fish, known as "Maahor Gohona" in Assamese, is considered a symbol of prosperity and fertility. During the Juroon ceremony, the groom's family presents the bride with a pair of fish, often made of silver or gold, as a symbolic gesture wishing the couple abundance and prosperity in their married life. The fish symbolizes fertility and the hope for the couple to have a thriving and fruitful family life.

Photo 10:
We love stories within a story. This wide-angle frame during Swaralipi’s Juroon celebration has many frames within a frame.

The smile on the groom’s face speaks about all the happiness that they felt on their special day. Having met on a dating app, the bride and the groom connected instantly. Within 13 months, they were convinced that they were each other’s soul mates and were all set to commit the rest of their lives together.

Both, being book lovers, and sharing common interest in books, made them connect automatically. Their first conversation started with a quote from “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy''. This is how their story of shifting from texting each other to engaging on long phone calls, going out on dates and finally getting in a relationship escalated only for the better. This is how their love story turned into a marriage.

Their smiles and glow at their marriage ceremony are truly extraordinary. Something so natural that words fail to express the glow on their faces.

It is so interesting to know how books became a part of their conversation, unknowingly intensifying their chemistry, and ultimately making them realize that they had finally fallen in love with one another. The groom’s smile is truly a one in a million. Their bond is so strong that it can be visible even through the photographs. Such love and chemistry are rare but lucky are those who find it in their lives.

Reminiscing Nang’s wedding looking through some of these images before we finally share the complete set with the couple.

We shot this wedding last month but it just feels like yesterday. It was a small wedding but with many interesting rituals. My first time experiencing many of the rituals as well. I still can’t get enough of the diversity north East India offers.

More from this set soon.

It was a different kind of wedding. Its ways and rituals were in contrast to what I had been experiencing as a photographer. I lived in North East India for many years to pursue my education before moving to Bangalore but this was my first time travelling to Diphu. Diphu is nearly four hours away from Guwahati and it was intriguing to experience Karbi Culture.

This was an event I had never experienced in my life. The couple were kept away from each other and the rest of the family members performed the rituals in the presence of parents and village folks. It was only after these rituals were completed that the bride and the groom were to meet early in the morning. This was a lifetime experience for me as I could discover something new about Karbi culture.

After the shoot, when I spent my time thinking over it, I realised the Karbi wedding ceremony is a marriage that holds fast the traditions and customs of the indigenous people. I realised marriage is a sacred thing in determining a life partner so it must be decided together in the male family. I guess that’s why the couple was kept away from each other while the families and the village folks discussed the wedding. I also realised that the Karbi tribe has a very thick history and traditional traditions and highly respects their customary law.

I have documented few Muslim weddings and this is one that is close to my heart. The wedding ceremony was grand and people were warm hearted. I can still remember the glow the bride had on her face. There wasn’t a moment she didn’t smile and it made the images look naturally beautiful and bright. The wedding ceremony turned out to be extremely fun and loving. The bride’s eyes were sparkling with joy and I feel this can be seen in the images too. The bride’s mother and her sister shared a beautiful bond. It was a beautiful time when I think of it. It was filled with happiness, love and excitement.

Here are nine images

I have lived in Assam for a long time as a student. But I never had the chance to see an Assamese wedding myself. This wedding ceremony is special to me because it was my friend Himakshi's wedding ceremony.

Not only this, I came to know about Juroon, an Assamese pre-wedding ceremony, for the first time. This ceremony welcomes the bride to the groom’s family by offering her gifts and showering her with blessings. It was a joyous ceremony filled with laughter and happiness. Having known her well, being there as a friend and a photographer was a good feeling.

When you leave something behind, you realised how much you loved doing it only when you start it again. This is one of my favourite experiences so far. At that time I was on a sabbatical from wedding photography for three years. Anand, the brain behind , reached out to me on a quiet evening. It was about an engagement in Goa, and it sounded like the kind of work I love doing. And that is how I made my comeback in wedding photography. I am thankful for all the collaborations I made over the last few years.

Divya and Varun were an extremely fun-loving couple, even though I thought they were exactly the opposite the first time I met them, especially because both of them were high intellectual people. And my assumption was intellectuals are Introverts to some extent. They're the creative types, the geniuses who get stimulation from learning rather than socialising. But little did I know that Introverts Make Great Dancers and they danced the night away. Their massive wedding in Hyderabad, which happened a few months later was no different.

“Every heart sings a song, incomplete until another heart whispers back. Those who wish to sing always find a song. At the touch of a lover, everyone becomes a poet”, Plato.

This was a perfect afternoon with some not-so-flattering outdoor light when the Sun was right up. Tried making use of the harsh shadows to amplify the mood of this portrait.

Winded this shoot with my dear friends just before COVID19 hit the world.

We are just back from the hills of Assam where we photographed a beautiful small-time affair that will remind us of this lovely couple — Nang and Klengdon — for years to come. This is our third wedding in Diphu, a small town that is located a few hundred kilometres from the capital city of Guwahati in Assam. While we must have photographed thousands of frames in the two days that we spent there, we are sharing just a couple of our favourite frames today. Now, we can’t wait to travel back to the hills to document another splendid affair. In the meantime, here’s some visual delight.

Pratiksha + Joshua, Darjeeling 2012

It was the month of November in 2012 when I got an fb-message from this beautiful, soon-to-be bride, Pratiksha. She wanted me to document her wedding in the beautiful hill station of Darjeeling. While I can’t thank you enough, for recommending my work, this wedding, even after a decade, still remains one of my favourite cross-cultural weddings that I got the opportunity to be a part of. Thanks to everyone in the family who made me one of their own and I guess that’s why are still good friends.

We hung out in the town a day after the wedding to spend sometime together to make some of these portraits.
