Flower Girl Baskets

A flower girl at a wedding symbolizes wishes for fertility and the forming of a new family and is seen carrying a decorated flower basket. She walks down the aisle before the bride, strewing rose petals or confetti as she walks and therefore the image of the flower girl is meant to depict the bride’s loss of purity for that of romance and fertility with her marriage.

The tradition dates to ancient Rome where the flower girl carried a basket with wheat and herbs for the bride and groom and would scatter it at the wedding ceremony to depict fertility and new beginnings. However, in the present day, most couples include a flower girl in the wedding party to honour a little one who is very close to the family.

Boutonnieres Or Favor

A boutonniere is technically a floral-adorned pin that is affixed to the suit jacket's lapel of the groom. Now this tradition goes back to the Middle Ages when knights would enter competitions or go to battle, and it was customary for their “true loves” to give them a scarf or a ribbon that they would tie around their sleeve and wearing this item was a declaration to the world of love and affection they carried with them. Later, came a tradition where the bride would break a flower out of her wedding bouquet and present it to her groom on the day of the wedding and he would wear it in declaration of the same sentiment. Hence a boutonniere is not just a decoration. It actually has a very romantic tradition associated with it.

The groom’s boutonniere is normally always made of a similar flower from the bride’s bouquet. If she carries a bouquet of Calla Lilies, he could wear a Calla Lilly boutonniere, if she’s carrying a bouquet of roses, he could have his boutonniere made with a rose and most times the boutonniere would be of the same colour theme as the bride’s bouquet. You would also see groomsmen wearing a boutonniere that would match his bridesmaids posey. Wearing of a boutonniere by the groom and bestmen also declares their ties to the bride and bridal party.

A Bridal Bouquet dates to ancient times where a Bride carried flowers because of their magical effects. It was also believed that the intensive fragrances of the various flowers warded off evil spirits and symbolised new life, new hope and faith. The Flowers in the Bouquet was considered to bring happiness and satisfaction in a marriage and the ribbon most times used to tie the bouquet symbolised fellowship. In the new age a bridal bouquet is carried more as an accessory and a lot of brides choose colours and the types of flowers they would like.

Bouquets could be fresh flowers or artificial. A lot of brides choose an artificial bouquet as it can be preserved for a long time and acts as an accessory of memory from their beautiful day.

Wedding Car Decoration – Significance

You would always see the bride arriving in a car decorated with flowers, bows, and ribbons, this dates back to the fact that friends and family of the wedding couple would decorate their marital bed with flowers and ribbons and these well-wishers es**rt the couple to the wedding bed and then leave and what this signifies is the importance of procreation. Thankfully, new couples do not have an audience, but the decorating of the wedding car is thought to stem from this ritual.

The decorations on the wedding car were predominately white or ivory, but in present days couples like to run with a colour theme for their wedding and hence you would see the wedding car decorated in the colours of the couple’s choice.

You would sometimes see Cans, Shoes or a “Just Wed” board fixed behind the decorated car. The Cans date back to an Egyptian ritual where the cans make a noise to announce that a couple has just been married. Shoes stem from the old times when the father would hand over a pair of his daughters’ sandals to the Son-in-law to signify that his daughter now belongs to him. The “Just Wed” board is more to announce to the audience that there is a newly wed couple passing by and invite people’s good wishes and blessings as they pass by.
