Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of the Sikh religion was married here to Sulakhni, the daughter of Mul Chand Chauna in 1485.Batala once called as Iron bird of Asia as it produced highest amount of C.I.Casting, Agricultural and mechanical machinery. Batala is still one of the leading cities in northern India in maufacturing of C.I Casting and agricultural and mechanical machinery. It's an agricultural
marketplace and industrial centre. Cotton ginning, weaving, sugar refining, rice milling, and manufacturing are some of other business taking place here..The whole city was lying within a fort. It had 12 gates as entrance and exit. These gates are still known by their old names e.g. Sheran wala Gate, Khajuri Gate, Bhandari Gate, Ohri Gate, Thathiari Gate etc.The much truncated India's portion of present Punjab is divided into three natural regions :the Majha,the Doaba and the Malwa.And here's the Batala in the Majha region...alongwith Amritsar,Gurdaspur and Pathonkot areas..Batala,a town of british India, in the gurdaspur district of punjab, with a station on the branch of the north-western railway,24 M. from Amritsar.Population is over 2 lakh's. It is an important centre of trade, with manufacturers of spares parts of machines n other goods needed for manufacturing and machinery works. From religious aspect,its the Sacred place of Sikhs as the marriage of the First Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Nanak Dev ji was held here and there's a Gurdwara named,Gurudwara Shri Kandh Sahib ,as its remembrance. Even there are many more great personalities from Batala...one name needs to be mentioned here ...that is Shiv Kumar Batalvi..the gr8 poet.
