SANGEET MALANCHA is an institution founded by renowned SITARIST, PANDIT INDRA KONWAR, father of KAUSHIK KONWAR, in Dibrugarh, Assam, to hone the musical talents of the region. It was established in 1979 under the Societies Registration Act, XX1 of 1860, registration No.817, for the upliftment of Indian Classical Music and has gained much popularity for its sincere efforts. ining in vocal as well as a variety of classical instruments like Sitar, Tabla, Violin, Hawaiian Guitar, Spanish Guitar, Mandolin, Painting, Kathak, Bharat Natyam, etc. SANGEET MALANCHA is the only institution in Upper Assam which is affiliated to PRAYAG SANGEET SAMITY, Allahabad, BHATKHANDE SANGEET VIDYAPITH, Lucknow, PRACHEEN KALA KENDRA, Chandigarh and SARBA BHARATIYA SANGEET-O-SANSKRITI PARISHAD, Kolkata, under which examinations are held through the academic year. PANDIT INDRA KONWAR, is a well known sitarist,composer,scholar, educationalist and writer of many books, which includes JHANKAR, Part -1 and 2, SHRUTI, SANGEET SHASTRA SAHAYIKA, etc, who also is the founder of UPPER ASSAM MUSIC COLLEGE , Tiloi Nagar with the Registration No.DIB/255/A/29 under the Societies Registration Act, XX1 of 1860. Indra Konwar , Principal and Artistic Director of these two institutions, along with Kaushik Konwar and a few other music lovers of Dibrugarh have put in a lot of effort for the progress and development of these institutions. Musical Concerts are being organised quite often by SANGEET MALANCHA, where leading musicians of the country and abroad are invited to mesmerise audiences with their splendid performances. It also provides a platform for the students of the institute as well as other upcoming artists to showcase their talent, which has gained great admiration of the public. Another unique system offered by this institution is organising workshops for giving Taalim (training) under Gurukul method termed as “SANGEET GRAM”. This way the disciples were in constant touch with the Guru, which helped them not only in learning the art but also discipline of life, respect of the elderly persons, most importantly, knowing the principles and values of our rich Indian Tradition, Culture and Heritage in general. But this concept got lost because nowadays, most of the famous Gurus have so many students that they cannot afford to go for this kind of projects. Hence, this “ SANGEET GRAM “concept, which came to the mind of the founder of SANGEET MALANCHA, Dibrugarh, the noted sitar maestro PT.INDRA KONWAR, started, on 26th May, 1994 with the introduction of Tabla Workshop by Legendary Guru Tabla Maestro Pandit Shankar Ghosh . Since then, renowned artists from all over the country are invited to give ‘Taalim’ under this unique Gurukul method to the students from different places in different subjects of Indian Classical music and folk music. This provides the talented students the unparalleled opportunity to learn from the great Maestros and enhance their skills. With many such advents taken by SANGEET MALANCHA for the promotion and popularisation of Indian Classical Music in the region, today it has gained great admiration of many renowned personalities of Indian Classical Music and the public as well and it continues in its effort of imparting quality classical training to the interested students, greater than that, establishment of universal human values. Pandit Shivkumar Sharma is credited with making the santoor a popular classical instrument.He composed the background music for one of the scenes in Shantaram's film Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje in 1956. He recorded his first solo album in 1960.

In 1967, he teamed up with flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia and guitarist Brij Bhushan Kabra to produce a concept album, Call of the Valley (1967), which turned out to be one of Indian classical music's greatest hits.Further, he composed music for many Hindi films in collaboration with Hariprasad Chaurasia,starting with Silsila in 1980. They came to be known as the Shiv-Hari music duo.Some of the movies they composed music for were musical hits, such as Faasle (1985), Chandni (1989), Lamhe (1991), and Darr (1993).
