Kritika Khanna is India’s first woman para rower. She hails from Jammu. Her life was turned upside down when she had to undergo an amputation, following a life-threatening accident in 2003. However, instead of becoming a burden to anyone and being bogged down, she chose to fight back and started a gym for fitness. Kritika also went on to do a Bachelor’s in Animations and then an MBA. She worked different jobs for quite some time in Jammu and in 2011 joined the Grameen Bank. She wants to represent J&K in a para-rowing team in the future.

Insha Bashir of Beerwah area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district is the first wheelchair-bound woman from Kashmir to play basketball. After becoming the first female para-basketball player from Kashmir, she started training others, and in some time, a team was ready following which she played at the national and international levels and won many medals. She also pursued her Masters in Social Work.
Insha represented India in the US in 2019 and participated in the National Championship as the captain of the J&K Wheelchair Basketball Women’s team in 2019. Besides that, she was invited by the US consulate to be a part of the prestigious Sports Visitor Programme. She now motivates and inspires others in Kashmir to overcome their inhibitions and impediments and take up sporting pursuits.
Her major area of focus is to encourage differently-abled girls in sports, not just in Kashmir but across the country, and ensure that they have a say in their own lives. She practices on a daily basis following a professional schedule. After practice, she returns to the hostel and mentors, counsels, and instructs young girls who wish to rise beyond their struggles and play like her.
