Obituary
Shyamanuja Das
9-May-1970 to 28-Dec-2023 (53 years)

A computer engineer by qualification, Shyamanuja Das joined the newly launched Voice & Data magazine (Cyber Media) in 1994 after graduating with a diploma in journalism from the well-known Indian Institute of Mass Communications (IIMC), New Delhi. He honed his skills as a writer and editor during an era of tremendous change in the technology space, and went on to successfully launch India's first publication targeted at the Indian offshore BPO industry, BPOrbit.

His keen interest in data and analytics put him in-charge of major research initiatives at Cyber Media, and he was subsequently appointed as Editor for Dataquest magazine--a position he held with great distinction and acclaim. In 2012 he joined the business research & advisory practice of JuxtConsult to focus on advisory opportunities in the digital economy space. Along the way, he founded the non-profit DataJourno community to popularize data journalism among practicing journalists and journalism students. He also co-founded the very active "Odias in Machine Learning" group, and was active in organizing numerous Odia cultural initiatives--both online and offline.

In 2015 he joined the 9.9 Group and became responsible for all editorial and content activities for Enterprise Technology group (comprising CIOandLeader, IT NEXT and CSO FORUM ). Firmly focused on research and story-telling, Shyamanuja was responsible for driving unique content-led engagement activities like Case Study Workshops, Reverse Case Study exercises, TRP (The Responsive Pitch), and curating community-leveraged knowledge initiatives with CIOs, including thought leadership books. In 2018 Shyamanuja won the 20th Polestar Award for a technology feature article in CIO&Leader titled "Decoding Digital Transformation in India"

Shaymanuja's formidable intellect, well camouflaged under a disarming and pleasant personality, was on display when arguing passionately for ideas and causes he believed in--whether it was data privacy or AI. A stickler for process and quality, nothing annoyed him more than work that was poorly completed. However, his patience was legendary, and many who have worked with him will attest to his diligence, care and quest for perfection.

On the personal front, he was a jovial and social, with a wide range of interests outside work. Music was his passion--as were sweets and baked goods. While he had the demeanor of a serious, no-nonsense executive, he was curious, creative--and always ready with a witty joke or one-line comeback.
We miss you Shyamanuja!
