// I recently drank this Argentinean Torrontés gifted to me by one of clients. What a beauty it was! Light bodied & elegant but pure and intense in flavour. What a combination in a white wine. We were blown!

Torrontés is one the most important indigenous grapes of Argentina, being the most widely planted white grape in the country. For a long time it was made into low quality, mass produced wines thanks to the fact that it grows vigorously and hence very easy to over produce and make into thin, acidic wines that lacked flavour. However that is rapidly changing over the last decade or so.

Those coming from the Salta province (like the one I drank) in northern Argentina are of particular note. Here the grapes are planted in sandy soils at high altitudes going up to 1600 mts above sea level! (Side note : Argentina has the world's highest elevation vineyards in the world!)

The harsh weather, poor soil conditions and high altitudes result in lower yields, higher acidity and more intense flavours in the Torrontés coming from here! No wonder this wine was soooo aromatic, fresh and juicy with lots of citrus and stone fruits and a hint of herbaceous character.

Sexy Sips part 2 // German Riesling & Red Bordeaux

Bex Riesling QbA from Nahe, Germany - the yummiest imported Riesling on the Indian market that doesn't hurt the pocket! ₹2995/- in Mumbai.

Otherwise Rieslings can be expensive as the grapes are grown on steep slopes and painstakingly made through manual harvest because you can't use tractors on these crazy steep slopes, berry selection where each grape is picked individually depending on its level of ripeness and then fermented in small batches using indigenous yeasts that are present on the grape skins. And above it all, German Rieslings are produced in very small quantities!

Did you know that all of the wine produced in all of Germany is still lesser in volume than all of the wine produced in the just the Bordeaux region of France! Sounds crazy right?!

Which brings me to the next sip - Newest addition to the selection of Bordeaux wines available in India. This is your easy drinking, elegant and pocket friendly Bordeaux AOC (which means the grapes could come from anywhere in the Bordeaux region) from the house is Belian-Giraud. ₹2570/- in Mumbai.
