Support your local live music venue anyway you can! Like their pages, buy their merch. Eat their food if they are lucky enough to still be serving and share this page for us.
A group of live music venue operators in the City of Yarra has written to the council to ask for a bailout, saying state and federal government financial aid packages have not helped them enough.

Help Save the “Live Music Capital Of The World”
Behind the great title of “Live Music Capital of the World” comes the hard work, dedication and passionate support from the people of Yarra – the residence, the venue owners and the visitors who are enthusiastic about this iconic centre of Melbourne. It is the beloved lifeblood of our area and a well identified brand known around the world.
Outside of the city, the majority of live music venues lies the City of Yarra. The Yarra area attracts a significant portion of this billion dollar industry and the 17.5 million seeing live music in Melbourne every year. It attracts visitors and creates high demand for apartments in the area. It is a major income generator for the Yarra Council.
Live music venues was one of the first to be hit by the virus, with attendances dropping 100% since the middle of March as many were required to close dur to government policy. On average, we estimate that within the first month, venue owners are in debt by $30,000 as costs continue and income has disappeared.
It is easy to think businesses should be able to weather the silence due to government’s imposed self-isolation due to the coronavirus. However, anyone who has worked in the hospitality industry knows that it is a week to week gig. As soon as there is a quiet week or two, funds dry up and bills start to add up, pushing many to close for good.
It is estimated that the average live music venue spends in excess of $28,500 per month before the doors even open. A breakdown of estimated average overheads are:
$12,000 for staff
$10,000 for rent
$3,000 for insurance and rates
$2,000 for utilities and other fixed costs
$1,500 for licenses and permits.
That doesn’t include payments made to bands, bookers, suppliers, taxes and other operational costs.
In the current climate, for venue owners to just hold onto their venue will cost on average $16,500 per month.
The three rounds of government stimulus packages still does not assist live music venues. They are tailored for businesses with a turnover of more than $3 millions each year or $60,0000 a week, which excludes most venues.
The City of Melbourne has committed $10 million to their local businesses. We are asking the City of Yarra to use some of its surplus funds by committing $3 million to help businesses with a turnover under $3 million, with a dedicated funding pool for live music venues.
Your support will help us try and retain some staff and enable us to keep our venues by giving us a lifeline to cover fixed expenses like rent, power, rates, insurance and costs during a period with zero income being received. Only with the help of the City of Yarra, can live music venues stay live. If we close, all those years of experience, network, brand and reputation will be lost and may never be recovered to what it was only a month ago.
We also ask for Yarra Council to help us find alternative uses for our venue spaces during this lockdown. To create a local “Creative Spaces” initiative where government, businesses and individuals can use our space for office, projects and storage.
We expect this support to grow in coming weeks, as people start to reflect and take action on what makes our community great. It is eerie to drive past band posters promoting live acts that are no longer playing. Let us not allow Melbourne to become a ghost of its former glory. Please help Yarra live music venues stay alive.
