Originating from Emperor Augustus in 18 BC as "Augustus' Holidays," it was meant to honor the emperor and give workers a break after months of hard labor. Traditionally, people would visit their patrons for a small tip before enjoying horse races, a tradition that survives in Siena's Palio. 🐴
Today, Ferragosto coincides with the Catholic Feast of the Assumption, and while Italians no longer toil in fields, they continue to embrace this holiday.
