Have you heard of Katakai Fireworks? They're famous for their incredible Yonshaku-dama firework, and they've been around for over 400 years! It's said that it all started when each household in the town made their own fireworks and set them off by a small group of individuals and neighbors at street corners and other places.

This was our tour last year, and it was such a blast!
We were so lucky to get to see the world's largest fireworks display of Yonshaku-dama, but that wasn't all! We also had a truly unique experience there, including delicious meals prepared by local people in an old house and the chance to get to know the lovely people of the area.
We'd love for you to take a look at what the participants had to say. https://ideya.jp/tour/2023report/

Nagaoka City in Niigata Prefecture is home to the Nagaoka Fireworks, one of Japan's three largest and most spectacular fireworks displays! And here we have the home of the Kubota's sake brewery, which was founded all the way back in 1830 and focuses on using only the freshest local ingredients. Niigata fireworks and Kubota sake, which is brewed with history, are a match made in heaven!

Japanese fireworks are so precise! They form a perfect circle without any deviation. This firework is a 1 shaku size, with a diameter of 30 cm(0.98ft) and a weight of 7 kg(15lb). It's pretty impressive, both in height and diameter! The shot is 300m(9.8ft) high, and the open ball is 300m(9.8ft) in diameter.

Nagaoka City in Niigata Prefecture is not just a great spot for fireworks, but it's also home to some of the most beautiful Nishikigoi, or swimming jewels, you'll ever see! There, visitors can experience the heartwarming process of raising a pond to transfer beautiful Nishikigoi to a warm indoor facility before the snow piles up in an area of heavy snowfall.

This is last year's Kashiwazaki Fireworks Festival, and it was absolutely amazing!
The pink fireworks below are fireworks balls bursting in the sea, and they're absolutely beautiful. And there are lots more fireworks to enjoy, too! At the same time, 100 shaku-dama (large fireworks) with a diameter of 30 cm (0.98 ft) are launched simultaneously.
These are truly unique and you'll never see anything like them anywhere else!

The Katakai Festival in Niigata Prefecture is a truly special event, with the world's largest class of fireworks, the Yonshaku-dama, being displayed. To launch this 420 kg (926 lb) ball 800 m (2,600 ft) above the ground, a steel cylinder 5.2 m (17 ft) high and 1.8 cm (0.7 inchs) thick is used. The tube will also be buried underground on the day of the event, and the ball will be set up using a crane.
Everything is going to be absolutely huge!

On September 10, 1985, something truly amazing happened at the Katakai Festival in Niigata Prefecture. On that day, the first Yonshaku-dama (80 kg/176 lb. of gunpowder) was successfully launched! Guinness World Records was so impressed that they certified it as the “World's Largest Launched Fireworks.”
The fireworks were a whopping 800 meters across!
We're so excited to announce that this year's Katakai Festival will be held on September 13th and 14th!!

The cities of Tsubame and Sanjo are Japan's top spots for metal cutlery and metal household goods. They've been around for 400 years and have reliable technology to boot. The products are pricey, but if you see the manufacturing process up close and learn about the high quality of the products, you'll be convinced! If you're looking for a great place to stop before the fireworks in Niigata Prefecture, this is it! It's about 1.5 hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen bullet train.

Just an hour and a half away from Tokyo by Shinkansen bullet train, you'll find the lovely Niigata Prefecture, home to the best Japanese brand of rice, Koshihikari. When you're watching the three major fireworks in Niigata, why not bring along some delicious rice balls and sake?

The Katakai Festival is a truly special event held on September 14 and 15, 2024 in Ojiya City, Niigata Prefecture. It's just an hour and a half by bullet train from Tokyo and a 30-minute drive from there, so it's easily accessible for anyone in the area.
The festival is known for its grandeur and beauty, and it's a wonderful opportunity to experience the local culture. The star of the festival is undoubtedly the world's largest fireworks display, the "Yon-shaku-dama"!!
This Katakai Festival has been going strong for more than 400 years! The festival is a wonderful celebration of community and a heartfelt expression of gratitude to the gods for a bountiful harvest, safety, and happiness.
The wonderful folks at the Katakai Festival make sure that all of the fireworks are donated by individuals and organizations. Everyone is welcome! Their names are proudly displayed on a numbering board set up at the venue to honor their contribution to the festivities. And there's more! A "banzuke chart" with their names printed on it is also distributed. A banzuke chart is a chart that in Japan shows the rank and class of sumo wrestlers. And here, in the same form, we've noted the names of all the kind folks who donated and the size of the fireworks.
Why not set off fireworks here as a special commemorative event?
