A few days ago we went to attend a wedding of one of our friends in the suburbs of Kisumu city. I say 'our' because she was a friend to all of us who were on board in our Toyota axio hybrid, 2015. One of us, the owner, chauffeured us after we agreed on fueling modalities. The experience has, however left me thinking about 'kupewa lift' to events

Everything was going on well until the car owner spotted us in the VIP tent gnawing the fruits of 'our connections' with the caterers. On seeing our plates full of succulent and sumptuously tasteful pieces of golden brown chilled chicken, he was irked, the appearance of the dish sent shivers down his spine and troubles ensued immediately.

He first summoned us under a tree and fed us with a two-minutes lecture on how he hates coming to disorganised functions, as if we were that event's planners.. He then mentioned that he would leave a bit early for a meeting with one of his clients at 5:00pm. He twisted his left arm and threw a glance at the wrist watch then nodded in affirmation.

We managed to convince him to give us a few minutes to finish enjoying our dish before we left which he reluctantly accepted. Immediately we settled in our seats, put our overwhelmed plates on our thighs, he sent a text to one of us.
"Guys, bado mnakula?"
From were he was and where we were seated, he could get a clear view of the activities we were engaged in but he chose to frustrate us.

"We Vinny, omba sahani tugawie huyu jamaa chakula aache umama," one of us suggested. I once again used my connections to get one of the most beautiful plates with soup and palm-full rice. Then we added a few pieces of chicken and beckoned him. The guy came dangling his car keys reminding us that the car was his and he can go anytime if we didn't behave ourselves. When we handed him the plate, his symmetrical heavy-lidded eyes brightened as if saying, "never be that insensitive again". We gave him a front seat where he could be spotted from any corner.

That trick plated magic to our friend. He forgot about his 5pm appointment and he never reminded us time again. He reminded me a famous saying in my village,

"It is a criminal offence to eat beef while you owe me money"
