- today we went to visit one of our lovely growers at Naivasha. They specialise in Hypericum Magical series and have about 11 hectares in production. Here is a snapshot of Magical Triumph coming up nicely! The weather is quite lovely out here too - it has been raining but we are glad to see the sun out and shining bright.

Did you know? About 40% of valentine's roses in the UK are imported from overseas. This is because February climate in UK makes it difficult to meet the demand of roses. To beat this - you can source Kenyan flowers this February specifically, our lovely mixed boxes. Farm Fridays

Cut flower harvesting at our source farms is usually done during the morning hours due to a number of factors - one being temperature. During morning hours, the temperature is low, therefore respiration is low, the plant water content is high. As the day goes by and temperature rises progressively dehydrating the flowers and making noon time not ideal for harvest. Harvesting time and temperature is important because they play a big part in determining how long a flower’s vaselife is going to be.

Did you know? Ethylene is a colourless gaseous plant hormone, its largest producers being fruits, vegetables and floral products. It regulates many processes of plant growth, development and death. But just as it has good side effects, ethylene has negative effects on flowers, it is known to cause bud and leaf fall, leaf yellowing, loss of deep colour, flower and petal drop, irregular bud opening and death. So good to remember to store your flowers away from ethylene producing fruits like apples and pears.⁠

Spray roses are gaining popularity by the day due to their elegant appearance and versatility. Spray roses usually have about 3-6 heads per stem hence the name ‘spray’ which differs from their standard counterparts who are known for their single headed stems. Due to the nature of our climate in Kenya, our flowers are able to grow under natural light throughout the year. Sunlight provides flower plants with all the energy they need to create food for themselves. The process is known as Photosynthesis. ⁠
Some farm farms also incorporate artificial lighting during night hours to increase 'day length' as required by certain plants.⁠

Did you know flowers and their plant parts make really good compost ingredients? Our source farms use their 'waste flowers' and leaves to make compost instead of discarding them.⁠
Using flowers as compost put the nutrients they were taken to grow them back into the system. is a big step towards healthier farming. Compost is also a good substitute for chemical fertilizers.⁠

You have probably heard you need to cut stems at an angle before vasing but do you know why?
Cutting stems at an angle adds more surface area enabling the flowers to take in more water, whilst also removing any blocked sieve cells so that the water can be easily absorbed up the xylem vessels.⁠ ⁠
