I hear this question all.the.time! Sister, bestie, sis-in-law, mom…? How do you choose your maid (or matron) of honor?
That can be a tough thing to navigate, 100%! When you love many people and have several close friendships, it can be hard to narrow it down to one person who will be your MOH.
Obviously the choice is 💯yours and honestly? There isn’t an exact science. I can’t give you a little quiz and tell you who should be your maid of honor. 😂 However, I can give you some things to ponder that may help!
-Who have you known the longest? This doesn’t necessarily shine light on your relationship, but if you’re debating between two really good friends, this could be a good fall-back if everything else is pretty “equal”.
-Who are you closest with? This tends to be the go-to when it comes to choosing your MOH. And with good reason, it generally is going to be someone you foresee being in your life for a very long time. 💕
-Who has been the most supportive of your relationship? Again, this may not indicate the strength of your relationship, but this person has been cheering you on from the sidelines during one of the most important and life-changing seasons of your life. 📣
-Who can best handle MOH duties? This shouldn’t necessarily be the end-all, be-all, however it is something to consider! Does she bring peace and calm when you are anxious and stressed? Is she able and willing to organize showers and a bachelorette party? Will she help you in planning when you need it? 📝
Like I said, there is no science equation to figure this out. This doesn’t take into account nuances of personality, history, and relationships. It is a huge honor to be in a friend’s wedding, as well as a big commitment. Being asked to be a bridesmaid or Maid of Honor means you are well-loved and trusted by the bride.
Along with being well-loved and trusted, it can also be a big financial investment. The average bridesmaid spends $1,200 to be in a wedding, while an average total cost for a Maid of Honor is over $2,000. Money is spent on a dress & alterations, shoes, makeup, hair, showers & parties, gifts, & sometimes more.
So as a bride, how can you make this a little easier for your girls? First off, just acknowledging the commitment is a great step! Second, don’t pick a $500 bridesmaid dress, even if it’s your favorite. The thing is, alterations are often needed and that $500 could shoot up to $700 pretty quick. Add shoes, jewelry, and hair & makeup, you may be past $1,000 just for the wedding day! If all your girls say they’re in for that, GO FOR IT 👏! Just stop & consider for a moment that not everyone can afford that.
Your friends and family love you - they want to be a part of your special day! Being mindful and considerate of how it affects them is an appreciated thing that is often not done. Don’t take them for granted!!

Ready to start wedding dress shopping? You’ve been dreaming of this for.ev.er and it is finally here! 🙌 If you’re newly engaged and want to make the most of your dress shopping journey, keep reading for my 3 tips! 1. Book 2 or 3 appointments for your first day of shopping! And as much as possible, diversify those shop types, as well. Boutique, consignment, luxury, and chain stores…if you pick a few of these to try, you’ll get a great idea of what options are out there!�2. Try almost every style on; be willing to try on styles outside of your “dream dress”. I get it - you’ve had a picture of yourself on your wedding day in your mind for years. And that’s great! But I can’t tell you how many brides I’ve talked to who have ended up purchasing dresses *outside* their ideal wedding dress. Each style is worth giving a try. If you don’t like it, now you know for future appointments!�3. Plan for a day spent in the fitting room. Wear minimal makeup, if any. You don’t want a full face of makeup to rub off on the first three dresses! Bring light snacks…you’re going to get peckish, but you don’t want to feel bloated by a heavy meal between appointments! Cheese sticks, nuts, juice, or multi-grain crackers are great options to munch on as you drive to the next shop.Bonus tip: I would recommend not booking more than 3 appointments on any given day. Dress shopping can be exhausting. You’re getting in and out of big, heavy dresses, making decisions constantly, and you’re on your feet most of the time.
