The process of making a Lakhon Khol mask is long and tedious. It starts with making a mold for the main structure of the head from soil and then making the head from paper or cardboard. After that, it has to be painted and decorated with kbach or stylish patterns, so that he could reflect on the character it represents.

According to Cambodian mythology, Apsaras were beautiful celestial maidens. It was believed that the Apsaras descended from heaven in order to entertain the gods or the kings with their beautiful dance, and thus originated the Apsara Dance.
Historical inscriptions within the temples show how Angkor kings kept hundreds of dancers in their royal courts. The Apsara dance was a type of classical dance reserved only for royalty and performed during ceremonies and festivals as offerings and appeasements to the gods or special guests. Sometimes these recitals would last the entire night!

In The Reamker Preah Ream and the Reap are fighting with their army in a battle between the evil and the righteous.
Preah Lak is the stepbrother of Preah Ream, he is the incarnation of the snake Naga.
In the epic The Reamker, he follows Preah Ream in the war against the demon Reap.

Hanuman is one of the most well known characters of The Reamker in Cambodia. In the epic, the Monkey Warrior helps rescue Neang Seda, the wife of the prince Rama who was kidnapped by the giant.
Hanuman is a smart and powerful character that never turns back from the battle.

Traditional dance culture must be maintained and inherited. One way to preserve it is by promoting and performing those dances, but to do this we need to train new dancers. Apsara Theater dance troupe has been doing that for years, students are learning dances since childhood to join the troupe and perform on stage.

Meaning ‘water nymph’ or ‘celestial spirit’, the Apsara is deeply rooted in ancient Indian mythology. Legend has it that these beautiful, divine beings would descend from the heavens to entertain gods and kings with their captivating dance and charm.
In the Cambodian traditional dances, the Apsara are portrayed by women, sewn into tight-fitting traditional dress, whose graceful, sinuous gestures are codified to narrate classical myths or religious stories.

ambodian Khon masks are used by lakhon khol dancers when performing an Indian epic called Reamker. This traditional dance theatre is thought to date back to the 12th century in Angkor Wat.
The art of making khon masks and lakhon khol almost did not survive the genocidal rule of the Khmer Rouge. Lakhon khol is know listed by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of Cambodia.
