Perched on a rocky peak and overlooking the Indian Ocean, “Rippleworth”, is a spectacular site rich with history, nature and architectural beauty. Constructed in 1938, “Rippleworth” is a stunning residence which was the home to one of Sri Lanka’s prominent families. Edmund Perera Wijetunge. Wijetunge was a prominent advocate of his time, holding the titles of JP and unofficial Magistrate, Solicito
r of the Supreme Court of England, Proctor of the Supreme Court of Ceylon and Crown Proctor of Matara. He also held a prominent position at the Donra temple being the Basnayake Nileme. The ripples of the Indian Ocean which surround this site has been the primary inspiration for the owner and architects of this building, hence the name “Rippleworth”. This theme has been preserved in the shape of the building and painting style of the entrance to the premises and interior. A unique touch has been added to the house with the dome built in the center which depicts the galaxy, the spectacular white split staircase and lotus hall. Geographically, “Rippleworth” is situated in a unique location which captures the view of the southern most point of Sri Lanka, the Donra light house. The panoramic view, contributes to an unmatchable serenity to this charismatic house. While preserving its tranquility, “Rippleworth” is yet a convenient location being a step away from the Matara city. “Rippleworth” is a site capturing the rising and setting sun with its reflection on the Indian Ocean, and is the epitome of the coupling of architectural grandeur and nature’s beauty
