Keeping the traditions alive 💛💍

A traditional Kandyan Bride wears 26 pieces of Jewellery from head to waist. There are attendant customs and traditions that are followed during dressing of a Kandyan bride.

A highlighting custom is the placing of the “Nalal Patiya” on the brides’ head at an auspicious time. It is usually placed by the Brides’ Mother or a close female relative of the Bride. Wearing the “Nalal Patiya” was the exclusive privilege of royalty in the past: Kandyan brides today wear it to distinguish themselves from the rest.

It is said that the traditional jewellery are designed and the manner in which they are worn is meant to ward off the evil.

The seven pendants of the “Maala Hatha” are said to represent the blessings of seven generations while the seven necklaces are believed to invoke blessings of fertility and prosperity. These pendants are in the shape of entwined swans called “Hansa Poottuwa” symbolising the unity of the wedded couple.

The “Ira & Handa” is said to symbolise an eternal happy marriage.

It’s amazing to see how rich and meaningful our traditions are, isn’t it?

Something to think about Wedding favors!

If you wish to give-out a wedding favor(s), note that the wedding favors and the thank you note are the only tangible items (unless there are printed pictures) that guests will take away from a wedding. Therefore, here are a few pointers to consider:

1) Think of the prevailing circumstances in which you’re having the wedding
2) Decide on the budget you wish to/ can allocate for wedding favors
3) Make a short list of what your guests will find useful or at least appreciate
4) Pick one or two out of that list that you and your partner prefers.

There are many items that you can offer as a wedding favor(s). But what if guests don’t appreciate or find it useful and throw away soon after they get home? 😯 Then it’s just a waste of your money 💵🤦🏻‍♀️

👉🏻 Here’s a solution that’s healthy for you and your guests ✅

➡️😷
Hand Sanitizer & Face Mask: since these items are still an essential part of our lives, you can offer them as wedding favors. Rest assured your guests will appreciate it very much and find it extremely useful. You can have the packaging & labelling customized as you wish.

➡️☂️👒
Hats, Umbrellas & Hand Fans: if your wedding is outdoors, in the tropics, during summer or during a rainy reason, these items will come in handy for guests during the wedding. There’s no doubt that your guests will find them very useful after your wedding as well.

➡️🪴
Plants & Succulents - you already know about this.

Apart from above, the usual wedding favors such as chocolates, cupcakes, miniature jam/ honey jars, miniature liquor bottles (if liquor is permitted) etc. are quite alright too 🤔💭

⛔️ The unpopular truth👇🏻

❗️ If your budget is insufficient, it’s completely OK not to give wedding favors ❗️

Feel free to your thoughts on this topic 💕

Toss with Love 💕

How about pretty & confetti for that grand send-off?

Instead of chopping fancy paper, you can make good use of dried leaves, leftover flowers/petals from a florist or old newspapers/ magazines to make confetti. To give it a touch of uniqueness the dried leaves, old or can be cut into a preferred shape of your choice.

Confetti is more or less an insignificant aspect of the Wedding (sometimes not even thought about) yet, it's these little details that makes your Wedding unique.

At Weddings by Dula we focus on the biggest to the tiniest of detail to make your Wedding just perfect!

Creative ways to serve snacks/finger-food at your wedding!

In weddings that serve a buffet, sometimes snacks/finger-food are served mostly as sharing platters while the wine and liquor are being served. Sharing platters are nice yet, if you want to be creative/personalize these snacks/finger-food, serving individual platters will be a a good idea. Check-out these images for a few creative ways to present them!

We won’t be using the term “Charcuteries” as these can contain items other than meat.

Before you decide to offer individual platters, ask your caterer the cost you would incur to execute this. Of course if it doesn't fit your budget, you can always go with a sharing platter.

Here are a few items to include in an individual platter - be mindful of quantities as you do not want the guests to fill-up on these before the buffet.

Nuts: 3 max for sharing/ 2 max for individual
🥜 Roasted Cashew
🥜 Almonds
🥜 Walnuts
🥜 Savory Roasted Peanuts

Fruits: 3 max for sharing/ 2 max for individual
🍎 Apple slices
🍇 Grapes
🍓 Strawberries
🍑 Dried Apricot or Dates

Crackers: 4 max for sharing/ 2 max for individual
🫓 Cassava chips (flavored)
🫓 Rice crackers
🫓 Cheese crackers
🫓 Bran/ Kurakkan crackers
🫓 Snack crackers
🫓 Potato crackers / Nachos

Cheese: 2 max for sharing/ 1 for individual
🧀 Cheddar or Gouda
🧀 Mozzarella
🧀 Goat or feta cheese

Tips:

➡️ If you are permitted serve wine and liquor, think of items that will pair well with the type of wine and liquor you offer.

➡️ It’s not recommended to include smoked meat items as they are usually served in the buffet as an appetizer.

Feel free to leave your thoughts...

Have a Happy Wedding!

When is a marriage solemnized at a Poruwa Ceremony?

Is it during exchange of rings, Pouring of Pirith Water or when the couple steps down from the Poruwa?

A man and a woman become husband and wife during the time-honoured Poruwa ritual called “Sarana Bandanaya”.

"Sarana Bandanaya" is the ritual with deep historical and cultural roots where the baby fingers (pinky fingers) of the bride and the groom’s right hands are tied together with a string chanted with Pirith and Pirith water (Pirith Pang) is poured over the tied fingers while chanting blessings. Pouring of Pirith Water is called “Atha Pang Wedima”.

This ritual is often associated with giving away of something precious to another party - in this case giving away the daughter and the son by the two parents’ for them to start a new family.

Aren’t these traditions so meaningful? ✨

Do you know the meaning of breaking a coconut when the couple steps down from Poruwa?

In a Sri Lankan wedding the Buddhists follow a tradition of having a "Poruwa Ceremony" in order to perform the marriage rituals. These rituals are not necessarily associated with Buddhism yet, it represents very deep and meaningful cultural values. However, some of these rituals are often misunderstood and misinterpreted by certain parities and today we will share one such misinterpreted ritual.

Breaking the Coconut: According to some, “the way the coconut breaks will denote how the couples' marriage/family life will be.. if it breaks into two perfect equal size pieces married life will be good and if it breaks into many tiny pieces the marriage life will be ruined”.

✅ The real meaning of breaking the coconut is, to bless the newly married couple with children and if any bad evil was surrounding them, for that evil to go away and for any “Aswaha Katawaha” to vanish, as the couple takes their first steps as husband and wife.

Each ritual performed at a Poruwa ceremony has a beautiful meaning.. Let’s carry those true meanings forward to future generations and not let the meaningless interpretations affect hide the true meanings and the purpose of these rituals ✨

“Should I register on a wedding registry or should I not?” 🤔 A tricky situation faced by couples. What is most valued at a wedding is the presence of those who are invited to the wedding. But as a gesture and as a tradition the newly weds are given gifts on their wedding day. Let’s discuss registering Vs. not registering.

Not registering for gifts:
📌 Possibility of ending up with the same item gifted by different guests. Eg: what will you do with 10 toasters? 😮
📌 Ending up with gifts that you do not require or not in your taste. Eg: What will you do with a set of champagne glasses if you both do not consume alcohol at home? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Registering for gifts:
📌 You can select the items of your preference from the registry, so that what you receive as a wedding gift is something you want, something you like and something that is in your taste ☺️
📌 Even if a guest doesn’t purchase a gift from the registry, they will get an idea of your taste and preference so they can consider it when buying a gift outside of the registry.
📌 The guests doesn’t have to carry cash/ cheques or those heavy gifts to your wedding reception. Once the guests pay for an item on your wedding registry, the gift will be delivered to your doorstep OR all the gifts that is paid for by guests on the registry will be made available to you in one location for convenient collection - free of hassle for you and your guests, specially during these covid times 🤗
📌 Possibility of some guests misunderstanding the concept of a registry. Our social and cultural believes and traditions play a big role here. While some may think that having a wedding registry is “forcing guests to get gifts” the others may think “ohh this makes our lives easier”. Here’s our take based on experience: A wedding gift registry makes things simple and easy for everyone ♥️

So if you’re looking for a wedding registry with a wide variety of wedding gift options checkout
