Meet our Keynote Speaker
We're so excited to announce that Prof. Hadi Belhaj will be the keynote speaker at TOGSE 2024
Professor Hadi Belhaj is Distinguished SPE Member and Faculty of Energy Engineering Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, UAE
Energy transition is a technical term used very frequently now days in many domains including engineering, political, environmental, economic and general public. Transition means the change from one state to another, and hence it must have a time component. As such, the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) mandates to keep the Net Zero CO2 limited to 1.5 degree centigrade by 2050 to mitigate global warming. IPCC argued that above this yearly global heating rate, substantial warming of extreme hot days and increase in heavy rainfalls in different regions of the world become inevitable, especially in the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, potentially raising the risk of severe weather. With the assumption that these IPCC conclusions are real, a time span of approximately 25 years left for the world to work collectively together and meet that target. The fact that we cannot escape is that energy transition changed the way we conceive and utilize fossil energy. It is not the first time that our world passes through an energy transition period; however, this one is exceptional. The scope of this talk focuses on defining different drivers and strategies that developed and developing countries adopted to transform their local and interconnected energy sector. For developing countries, the primary focus is on the fundamental commitment for energy diversification in order to achieve sustainable self-sufficient energy source/s less affected by socio-economical or geo-political factors. For developed countries, their scheme is a business driven by strictly politics. The crucial step is to examine the reliability of existed and projected alternative energy resources and ensuring their attainability and economical attractiveness within the timeframe set by IPCC. The current world population is reaching 7.9 Billion and expected to increase exponentially. More than half of this population have no access even to fossil fuel yet! The other half’s dependency and usage of energy is immense and growing! In the year 2019, just before the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, the world consumed almost 100 Million Barrels of oil, not to mention natural gas and coal! This is a scary figure when thinking about the alternatives! However, in one hand, we want to cut fossil fuels consumption to meet the 2050 Net Zero target, and on the hand, fossil fuels barely meet the world’s energy demand including unconventional resources! We need to answer several serious questions and discuss different challenging options to resolve this controversy!
