Cronulla you were amazing
On Tuesday Oct 10th we wrapped an incredible year of The Story Room in Cronulla. The Brass Monkey was our gracious host, and it truned out to be an evening filled with heartwarming tales and unforgettable moments. This marked our fourth event in Cronulla and it is encouraging to see it gain momentum in the community. The night was nothing short of amazing.
Our storytellers, three of who call The Shire their home, took to the stage to share deeply personal stories centred around the theme of "Courage and Determination: Each storyteller captivated the audience with their resilience and strength,leaving everyone inspired.
One of the standout moments of the night was when Sharon Xabregas, who is profoundly deaf and bilingual took the stage to share her story for the very first time. It was a beautiful testament to the power of 'Courage and Determination.'
Thoughout the entire event the amazing Isabella Haigh, Bella, signed the stories in AUSLAN, ensuring that our hearing-imparied audience members had the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in this incredible night. It is a wish of mine to make this happen more often

Joram van der Starre is an artist, using mediums of painting and photography. He has a unique eye for spotting the beauty in the world around us and he translates this vision onto his canvas. During lockdown he started a project called whereby we took photos of things that most people would perceive as ugly but by photographing it from a different angle, it became an image of beauty.

Kelly Murphy is a wildlife rescuer and carer. Since the black summer fires hit the south coast, she started transporting animal feed down the coast, made water stations for wildlife, made dreys for possums with no home, and transported whatever was needed when she could. She has since become a 24/7 wildlife rescuer and carer, a proud member of our state’s emergency services and very proud volunteer for Sydney Wildlife Rescue.

Irina Castellano is an authorized foster carer who is dedicated to providing safe homes for vulnerable children and has done so for over 80 children. There are no orphanages. Her work has been featured in over a dozen podcasts, three books, articles, as well as radio interviews like with SBS German Radio and The Meaningful Monday Radio Show. She also runs the nationally accredited Foster Carer Programs and Adoption seminars.

Harry Jun is a Sydney based comedian, host and cartoonist from Wollongong. He is the host of ABC Gamer's The Loot Drop and the school based comedy podcast, The Passed Notes. Harry started performing stand-up in 2017 and has performed at venues all over Australia including the Sydney Comedy Store and The Chatswood Concourse. Harry was a RAW Comedy NSW State Finalist in 2019 and 2020. Also in 2020, a kid at the high school he teaches at called him a “little bitch”. Life is full of peaks and valleys.
