💥Sadhguru💥: In India, there was a whole science behind conducting a marriage. When two people were to be married, it was not just the compatibility of the families or the bodies which was looked at, but a deeper energy compatibility between the two people. Most of the time, the two individuals getting married would not even have seen each other until the day of the marriage. But it did not matter because the compatibility was fixed by someone who knew such things better than the couple themselves.

When the couple came together, a Mangal Sutra was prepared. “Mangal Sutra” means “sacred thread.” The preparation of the sacred thread is an elaborate science. A few strands of raw cotton are taken, smeared with vermilion and turmeric, and energized in a certain way. The Mangal Sutra was prepared in such a way that once it was tied, it was for life and beyond. There have been situations where the same couples have remained together for lifetimes, consciously choosing to be like that because they employed ways to tie people together not just on the physical or emotional level. People’s nadis (subtle energy channels) were tied together.

What you do on the level of the body, mind and emotion goes with death, but what you do on the level of the energy stays on. There was no question of reconsidering because something far deeper, something beyond your understanding was tied together by people who knew what to do. The same procedure is done even today by people who do not know what to do. It does not mean anything because the science behind it has been lost.

Using a Mangal Sutra, people tied up two lives in a certain way. Now for these two people, there is no question of thinking, “Should this person be my wife or husband or not?” This question just does not arise. The relationship just goes on. It does not stop even with death. There are any number of couples in India where if one of them dies, the other one follows within a few months even if they are healthy. This is simply because the energies were tied together. If you are bound in such a way with another human being that two beings exist as one, that is a wonderful way to exist. It is not an ultimate possibility, but it is a beautiful way to live.

“I was really touched, I have never felt such oneness before. Just the overflowing of love that I felt within myself and also from everyone around was just beautiful. It was one of the most overwhelming experiences of my life. When the Bhuta Shuddhi chant started, we went around the fire, step by step flowing into the process like a river flowing into the sea. Just being with Nakul felt extremely special. There were tears in my eyes, so did everyone”, says Vaishali with a smile lingering for long.

Nakul on the other hand shares with us, "The whole process was very intense right from the first moment when we walked into the hall. Witnessing a union:
"I’m excited to be attending my first Bhuta Shuddhi Vivaha. We enter a room which is immaculate, brimming with serene energy, fragranced by an incense or "Sambrani dhoop". We’re all sitting with pin drop silence, unguided and waiting for the bride and groom to arrive. A quick look around shows the precision with which the room has been arranged with the things needed for the ceremony. Its a simple setup, but delicately designed and geometrically aligned, that it enhances the experience of the room, to make it a vibrant space, before even the ceremony begins.The Sumangalas take their positions and one by one the bride and groom arrive with their respective parents, to the tunes of pleasant music, and everyone take their place, amongst the uplifting buoyancy of increasing energies in the room.

Suddenly, an enthralling voice emanates and Sadhguru introduces the Bhuta Shuddhi Vivaha, and indicates the existential significance of a couple coming together for marriage, and how it can be a stepping stone towards an Ultimate Union. The Vivaha begins, the fire is lit, assisted by the ghee, and along with various buoyant chanting via audio, guidance and support from the Sumangalas, the couple begins the process of cleansing the five elements - Bhoomi (Earth), Jal (Water), Vayu (Air), Agni (Fire), Akash (Space) - going clockwise around the yagna, tied together with a thread dipped in turmeric, which is systematically arranged by the Sumangala , to bind the energies of the couple into a nuptial knot. The process continues as the couple and the participants remain involved with the chants and observing, and in a room filled with 125 people or so, for a wedding in India, there is simply an unexplained stillness and imbibing of energy which is felt by each one of us.

The presence is overwhelming, and regardless of the age, we are all teary and many are sobbing while gasping, and we all feel blessed by the opportunity that Sadhguru has offered to bask in such subtle and serene presence.The ceremony lasts only for 45 minutes, as the music changes to a celebratory tune, the turmeric dipped thread released by fire, and we suddenly step out of a trance and wipe our tears in unison. We are all touched by the beauty of the aesthetics and subtlety of the process to the core, and it will certainly remain an experience of a lifetime.

Unlike the typically jarring and long weddings in India, this was short and precise. Without even knowing the science behind the cleansing of the five elements, we could all tell with a fair amount of certainty, that we came out of the space transformed, and the couple were blessed and bonded to some other dimension of reality.We all offered a pinch of rice to the couple, who were cheerful and overwhelmed themselves, and it felt like an unity had happened amongst all of us.
