👟 The Element of Breakdancing 👟
Breakdancing is a style of street dancing that incorporates coordination, acrobatic and intricate body movements, style, and aesthetics. It evolved from the hip-hop movement during the early 1970s and is the most widely known of all hip-hop dance styles.
August 11-13 we celebrate Hip Hop 50 and showcase some of Notts’ finest break dancers.

🖼️ Graffiti 🖼️
The Hip Hop pioneer Fab 5 Freddy helped to popularise the link between the street art scene which emerged in late 1960s New York, with the development of Hip Hop in the ‘70s:
“I developed these theories that all these elements of our urban culture were beginning to seem like one big thing. This is in 1978.”
The artistic expression taking place on subway trains, on walls and public furniture, was seen as one with the music of black New York subculture;
“I helped explain to people that graffiti was part of hip hop. It was always something I saw as one cultural movement.”
On August 11-13, get involved, try a street art workshop or watch the live art being created to mark this historic occasion.

🎧 The element of DJing 🎧 In 1973, 18 year old, Jamaican-born New Yorker Clive Campbell aka DJ Kool Herc came up with the ‘merry go round technique’ with two turntables. The use of 2 turntables was adapted from downtown Manhattan discotheques. Herc didn’t play disco though, he specialised in hard-edged funk music. Clap your hands, stomp your feet. James Brown and all that good stuff. Herc noticed that people went especially wild for the break beat section, when a hard drum solo would create an energetic contrast. He isolated the break beat of one song, and would mix straight into the break of another. Through this ingenuity, he created a new form of music: Hip Hop. MCing, or rapping, gives voice to Hip Hop. It communicates “The Message” of the culture. Chuck D calls it “the CNN of the Black community”. On August 11-13, we bring old school Notts Hip Hop MCs together with new generation talent, to pass on their knowledge and salute the culture. PEACE #Knowledge #HipHop50 #Nottingham #Summer #Summerevents #Events #Freeevents #Culture #Arts #RapMusic #Turntablism #Graffiti #StreetArt #Breakdancing
The 5* Elements of Hip Hop Culture Hip Hop is not just a type of music. It’s a whole culture in itself. In the lead up to Nottingham’s #HipHop50 celebrations [August 11-13], let’s look at the pillars, or elements, which make up Hip Hop. 🧠 Knowledge 🎤 MCing 💿 DJing 👟 Break dancing 🖼️ Graffiti 📢 Beatboxing 🥁 First up… 🧠 Knowledge This pillar is integral to the culture: it expresses the Black consciousness of Hip Hop. Knowledge comes through in lyrics that deal with social reality, in the mastery of the DJ craft, the spray can or break mat, even in Flava Flav’s giant clock and the timeless question: “Do you know what time it is?!” For us in Nottingham, honouring this pillar means hosting panel discussions, talks, debates and workshops. We’ll hear from the original heads who birthed Nottingham’s rich Hip Hop culture back in the golden days, right through to the young people who are the future of local Hip Hop. PEACE *4-6 depending on who you ask! Not everyone includes knowledge or beatboxing, but we feel they are so important and should be celebrated as part of #HipHop50 #Knowledge #HipHop50 #Nottingham #Summer #Summerevents #Events #Freeevents #Culture #Arts #RapMusic #Turntablism #Graffiti #StreetArt #Breakdancing
