Today, we commemorates John Chilembwe Day, a time to honor the life of Reverend John Chilembwe, a national hero who boldly stood against colonial injustice in 1915. His legacy of resistance and self-determination continues to inspire generations.

Renowned Malawian artist Samuel Kambalu masterfully captures this defiance in his acclaimed artwork Antelope, which was displayed on London’s Fourth Plinth for two years. The sculpture features Chilembwe alongside missionary John Chorley, with Chilembwe wearing a hat—a deliberate act of protest at a time when colonial laws forbade Africans from donning hats in the presence of Europeans. Kambalu’s piece not only commemorates Chilembwe’s bravery but also invites global audiences to reflect on colonial history and the power of art in preserving our stories.

As we celebrate this national holiday, may we draw strength from Chilembwe’s vision and courage to build a future marked by freedom, dignity, and unity.

"Where excellence reigns" meets " where we art"

Big news for the arts in Malawi!

MUST and Kweza Arts Hub have joined forces to take creativity to the next level! From short courses to hands-on work experience, this partnership is all about unlocking potential and shaping the future of the creative industry.

As Kweza Arts founder Q. Malewezi says, “We will not just be giving them skills, we will foster their creativity that defines us as a nation.”

Here’s to empowering young talent and celebrating the arts that make Malawi shine!

The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) has partnered with Kweza Arts Hub to boost the creative sector in the country.

Among other things, the partnership provides short courses and work experience for MUST students, particularly in the arts industry.

Founder of Kweza Arts, Q. Malewezi, says the partnership creates new opportunities for young people.

"We will not just be giving them skills, we will foster their creativity that defines us as a nation," Malewezi says.
On her part, Vice Chancellor at MUST, Professor Address Malata, welcomes the partnership.

"It is a great opportunity for our students to gain real-world experience," Malata says.
