Today, we commemorates John Chilembwe Day, a time to honor the life of Reverend John Chilembwe, a national hero who boldly stood against colonial injustice in 1915. His legacy of resistance and self-determination continues to inspire generations.
Renowned Malawian artist Samuel Kambalu masterfully captures this defiance in his acclaimed artwork Antelope, which was displayed on London’s Fourth Plinth for two years. The sculpture features Chilembwe alongside missionary John Chorley, with Chilembwe wearing a hat—a deliberate act of protest at a time when colonial laws forbade Africans from donning hats in the presence of Europeans. Kambalu’s piece not only commemorates Chilembwe’s bravery but also invites global audiences to reflect on colonial history and the power of art in preserving our stories.
As we celebrate this national holiday, may we draw strength from Chilembwe’s vision and courage to build a future marked by freedom, dignity, and unity.
