PERPADUAN KUNCI KESTABILAN SARAWAK – TPM DATO' SRI FADILLAH

The Christmas tree, present in thousands of homes and establishments during the holiday season, goes beyond its decorative appearance. With a rich history and profound Christian meaning, it has become one of the most representative symbols of Christmas.

1. The Lights
The colorful lights, another iconic feature of the tree, hold a symbolism that transcends mere decoration. The Book of Blessings invites the faithful to see in this tree, “full of light, Christ, the light of the world, who with His birth leads us to God, who dwells in inaccessible light.”

2. The Star
At the top of the Christmas tree, a star is traditionally placed, although in recent times some have opted for a bow. The star symbolizes the one that guided the Magi to Bethlehem, where they found the Holy Family. According to the Gospel of Matthew, this star rested over the place where the Savior was born, pointing the way to Him.

3. The Gifts
The gifts traditionally placed under the Christmas tree symbolize the offerings brought by the Magi to the Christ Child as a sign of adoration: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

4. Ornaments
The Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy mentions that, according to the evangelizers of Nordic countries, Christian decorations on the tree included apples and sweets hung from its branches, representing “gifts.” Over time, these elements have evolved into ornaments and decorative balls that still retain the symbolism of offerings and blessings.
