Don't Look Down: 21 Sky-High Photos Captured by Urban Climbers

Mountain landscapes and cities have a surprising amount in common. First, they can be daunting, challenging environments, both physically and mentally. They pose extreme conditions, and both leverage height as a way to represent their power. A premium is put on lookout points and views, and the peaks and valleys of a skyline at sunset are equally as stunning as a mountain range at the same moment. Designers are even starting to reify this metaphor in building form.So, it only makes sense that people would start climbing buildings. They're not all as tall as mountains, but they can be just as challenging. Plus, beyond determining how to "summit" the structure itself, you have to figure out how to not get busted for trespassing. In Russia and Asia especially, young people are "skywalking," a new trend that produces some of the scariest, most dramatic images of cities there are. While not all of them BASE jump off when they are done, they are certainly flirting with death on some of the world's tallest buildings, hundreds, and sometimes thousands of feet above the ground.Here are some of our favorite action shots:Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro
