DJ ‘ing is a passion
I have been a Professional DJ for 20+ years spinning at private parties and weddings all over Canada. My love for music transcended my own enjoyment when I realized I could pass that same joy to others by playing music for them while they danced, moved and sang along. Since then DJíng has been a personal passion and I pride myself in keeping a dance floor packed and playing music for my audience rather than myself. Nothing brings me more joy than creating energy on a dance floor and feeding off that energy to make my DJ sets even more memorable.
I was born and raised in Kenya and in Swahili, JuaKali literally means “Burning Sun” but in a Kenyan context it refers to people that work under the burning sun with scrap materials to craft beautiful looking pieces of art. That description is apt as I take existing music and mix it together to create a seamless musical and dance experience for my audience. My logo, designed by a close friend in 1992, is a sun with headphone around it - DJ JuaKali
Having started in highs school in the 90s, my tools today remain the traditional pair of technics turntables and a mixer and a collection of over 600 vinyl records. Of course, with new technology I now also use digital media while continuing to use turntables to control the analog and digital music.
While not doing gigs, I regularly create non-stop mixes of different themes and upload them for download or streaming for all to enjoy. These mixes are great for listening at the gym, in the car during your commute or road trip, while entertaining guests or just a relaxing at home.
I currently live in Penang, Malaysia and am looking forward to continuing the same passion for music and DJíng in my new home.
