Celebration of Tradition: Fali Cultural Dance Enthralls Audience at Governor Fintiri Flyover Commissioning in Yola
The Fali people (called the Bana in Nigeria) are any of several small ethnic groups of Africa. The Fali are concentrated in mountainous areas of northern Cameroon, but some also live in northeastern Nigeria. The Fali are composed of four major groups, each corresponding to a geographic region: The Bossoum Fali, the Kangou Fali, the Peske–Bori Fali, and the Tingelin Fali. The Fali in Cameroon have been described as being centered on Garoua as well as the rocky plateaus and peaks of the Adamawa mountains in the country's north.
The term Fali is from a Fula word meaning "perched," a reference to how Fali compounds appear on the sides of mountains. The Fali in Nigeria primarily live in the Mubi District, Mubi Division of the former Gongola State.
The vibrant and historic Fali cultural dance brought a lively and festive atmosphere to the recent commissioning ceremony of the Governor Fintiri Flyover in Yola. The event celebrated not only the inauguration of a significant infrastructure project but also the rich cultural heritage of the region.
The commissioning ceremony was a landmark event, marking the completion of the state-of-the-art flyover, a testament to the progressive vision and commitment of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to enhance connectivity and development in Adamawa State. The flyover, a critical infrastructure project, promises to ease traffic congestion and boost economic activities in Yola and its environs.

Laka Cultural Dancers Illuminate Governor Fintiri Flyover Commissioning with Traditional Brilliance.
The recent commissioning of the Governor Fintiri Flyover in Yola was marked by an unforgettable performance by the Laka cultural dancers, adding a rich cultural dimension to the celebration. The event showcased not only the inauguration of a key infrastructure project but also the vibrant traditions of the Laka people.
The commissioning ceremony, which heralded the completion of a pivotal flyover designed to alleviate traffic congestion and foster economic growth in Yola, was a momentous occasion attended by dignitaries, community leaders, and residents. The Laka cultural dancers, with their mesmerizing performance, were a highlight of the event, captivating the audience with their rhythmic movements and traditional attire.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, in his address, highlighted the dual significance of the event. "Today, we celebrate a milestone in our infrastructural development with the opening of this flyover, which will greatly benefit our community. Equally important is the celebration of our cultural heritage, exemplified by the Laka dance.
The Laka (Laus, Lao Habes) are a subgroup of the Ngambaye people, who were once a large and powerful ethnic group in northern Cameroon, southern Chad, western Central African Republic, and northern D.R.Congo. Some can also be found in Borno State in Nigeria.
Most Laka live in villages where little notice is taken of events outside their own region. Even through the Laka can understand their populous neighbors, the Ngambay, they are a separate ethnic group with their own traditions and history. The Laka area is an area of Chad that is known for agriculture, and many Laka plant cotton for cash crops in addition to millet which is for making their staple 'boule ', which is a half round ball of millet cooked into a thick paste which is dipped in a sauce. They also grow corn, manioc and other vegetables, along with beef cattle.
For centuries, with the linguistically related Mbuns, they dominated the Adamawa región, battling periodically against Fulbe slave raiders. Those slave raids continued into the early twentieth century.
It is believed that Laka peoples originated from the northwest in the area near Lake Chad and were pushed southward over the last two centuries by the expansion of the Fulani empire into their current location in southern Chad. They share linguistic and cultural ties with their Cameroonian neighbors who live to the south and were also pushed south by the Fulani.
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Lakas fiercely resisted German and French colonization efforts, suffering military defeat and population decline in the process. They are a Bantu people. In D.R. Congo, the Lakas strongly supported the Kwilu Rebellion in the mid 1960s. Still suspicious of the central government of Zaire, they live as small farmers.
On the relocation of seat of power from Gurin to Yola, those soldiers who came first set up settlements after their names or bore the names of the conditions they found in that place. Consequently, places like Geriyo (Ger= lake, yo= death), Karewa (karwa= cornstock), Bekaji (Beekaji= sustainable land) and Dobeli (Dobe= top of the town) were named. History: It is believed that Laka peoples originated from the northwest in the area near Lake Chad and were pushed southward over the last two centuries by the expansion of the Fulani empire into their current location in southern Chad.
