Many of those stories about other cultures are far from the truth. Infact, you will be surprised when you encounter people of those cultures.
I remembered my service year at Jebba, it was a memorable experience and I look forward to visiting the town again. As a market lover, there was a little language barrier but it was fun to reach an agreement with the vendors.
And then I wonder why the stories we grew up with? Well, there may be an iota of truth in some but until you experience it, don't believe all that you’ve heard.
Tourism has a unique ability to foster peace by bridging cultures and breaking down barriers. When we travel and find ourselves in new environments, we learn about different customs, traditions, and ways of life. We also have an understanding however little of why they behave the way they do.
This may look simple but the cultural exchange helps promote understanding and tolerance, reducing stereotypes and misconceptions. I cringe at some misconceptions among cultures.
Another way tourism can foster peace is through food. The easiest way to associate with a culture is through their food and dressing. How many times have I taken ofe nsala without visiting the south east? How many times have I worn kente without a trip to Ghana?
On a larger scale, tourism can serve as a form of "soft diplomacy," connecting nations and encouraging peaceful interactions. As more people experience the beauty and richness of other cultures, the desire for conflict diminishes, replaced by a shared respect for diversity.
In essence, tourism is a powerful tool for building a more peaceful and interconnected world!
It's World Tourism Day and the theme for the year is ‘Tourism and Peace.’ I am Funmi, the kitchen dove and I bring peace, love and transformation to your kitchen experience!
