Note to the Minstrel.

I admonish you today from a place of understanding and in my office as a teacher to you all.

I'm writing this on praise as I will write you on other topics subsequently.

While it is good to praise and worship our God with vibes and ginger, you can be doing it from a place of you enjoying yourself while not actually praising the giver of your life.

A thin line separates this and it's coming from consciously not forgetting it's God we are praising and not to enjoy ourselves.

A little touch of vibes here and there is good but let's focus on actual songs and not use vibes as the cover up.
It's seems like this some times and that's not the goal.

Psalm 47:7 ►
King James Bible
For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.

The understanding in this verse means knowing who you are praising and how to do it.

Let's not cover up inadequacies with vibes and forget that it's a praise to God and not our feeling.

Action points.

1. Learn actual lyrics.
2. Sing actual praises.
3. Focus on songs blending and song choices.
4.Get intimate with song flows and smoothen it.
5. Do praises always with understanding.
6. Plan a list for every week.

Till I write you again, don't forget these words.

Get paid for your pain!!!

You’re hurting already
You’ve been bent already
You’ve been disappointed already
You’ve been rejected already
You’ve been betrayed already…

Common!!!
You have experienced all forms of pain in different levels

So why quit now without getting a reward for it?

The reality of success comes with so many unpleasantries

You’ve got to be resilient to scale through

You need an irregular level of energy and endurance to win

Dreaming is free but turning it into reality isn’t free… and it isn’t cheap too

You’ve got to pay some painful price.

Everyone wants to be different, everyone wants to be successful, everyone wants to be great

BUT not everyone achieves it?

You know why?

Most people quit when they start experiencing pain

No pain no gain , remember…

You CANNOT be like everyone

A woman in labor must endure pain to have a baby

Your greatness is at the other side of your pain

Good thing right now is you are experiencing the pain already

So you’re qualified to win.

Hang in there, fight harder, push harder, muscle up more strength from within

Do not look back , focus on the prize

Make sure you get paid for your pain

The reward in the end is NEVER regular.

Spice it up!

While preparing for such a musical concert/ live recording, several ideas for doing a solo or taking a solo display wouldn't have been part of the plan.

However, thinking like there was no box in the first place would have just given the solo artiste such freedom to have come up with "S**t singing" as an option for her performance.

Yes! you read it right! S**t Singing!
S**t Singing is singing words known as musical jargon to produce musical notes while blending it with the current music being played.

Simple put, Ad libitum is the word that better describes it than Adlibs.

This will definitely give your audience the spice they didn't ask for but you gave!

Common! Whatever you do,find the extra and add it to your ordinary!

P:S I don't own rights to the video/music used.

I remain your favorite Music Consultant.

Oga Sile, cold water doesn't and cannot affect my voice.

Yes it can't immediately but having it on a regular basis permanently keeps your voice in a relaxed state hence not allowing the muscles by the diaphragm function without stress.

Some of you even know this O but yet compare yourself to people that do 2 hours vocal exercises everyday.
Shebi Okposo takes it,shebi Kim Burrell eats icecream.

Weldone O.

Accurate brethren observer!

All what these people have done are still doing, can you do half or quarter of it?

Your voice that hasn't found Jesus before O,you are drinking ice on it.
Carry on.

Any one who is self motivated doesn't need to be talked into growing or how to develop his or her skill.

Having a good voice isn't all you need to achieve success in music.

If you have to be cajoled into learning and developing yourself in the field you've chosen then you should ask yourself these questions.

1. Am I really serious about this gifting God has placed in my hands?

2. Do I really want to make impact with this gift?

3. Do I have all it takes at this level to lead the world with this gift of mine?

You don't need to answer this loud. Just answer the questions in your mind.

Every opportunity to learn is another chance to get better.

Will you keep doing the same old things that you know and want to achieve a new and better result with the same methods?
That is impossible.

A price is to be paid for every level of success and if you can't pay that price, you can't rise above that level.

Brace up yourself and be ready to be teachable because this is the major attribute of winners.

An opportunity to learn collectively is also an opportunity to grow individual.

What excuse can be bigger than your reason to succeed? Find an excuse to succeed and not fail.

Always find a reason to win!

Stop Making Your Choir/ Music Director go through hell at rehearsals!

A rehearsal isn't for learning songs! Know this today! Rehearsals are to blend what you and everyone other members of the team have learnt and known in private.

Learn and know your parts before coming to rehearsal.
Rehearsals are for blending, fine tuning and putting everything other seemingly 'difficult" part in place.

Below are tips on how to score a song. Don't be the weak link on your team!

*SCORING A SONG*

It is the ability of literally knowing how a song was written, structured, and recorded. You inversely become the owner and producer of that song. This means that, you have to know the lyrics, the harmony, melody, rhythm (You have to know everything about the song!)

The HOW-TO of Scoring a song entails what I'm about to write now.

1. JUST LISTEN
Get your phone or mp3 player listen to the song, enjoy the melody. Don't start learning it. Feel the weight and sweetness of the song. You can do this as many times as possible. Listening is best with headphones in order to get all the details

2. KNOW THE STRUCTURE/SEQUENCE OF THE SONG:*
Know how it started either from the intro to the chorus, from chorus to verse or vice versa. This will help you achieve alot at the long run. This is the first stage of scoring a song.

3. WRITE THE LYRICS
Getting the lyrics down on a notebook will help you when learning the lyrics. I want to warn you... Write down the song by yourself, I don't advice you to go to internet and copy and paste because writing the lyrics down by yourself helps the words stick to your memory faster. It is good to check it online, but do this to see if it tallies to what you heard/wrote

4. LEARN ALL VOCAL PARTS, BREAKS E.T.C

This is where I sometime begin to have problem with singers. Some will be saying I'm an alto singer so l scored only d alto part Ahhh. My dear you are a SINGER NOT ALTO SINGER. Identify and learn all the parts. Beside Singers should know how to swap parts. So Knowing what all the parts sound like comes in as a bonus... As it will help you differentiate one part from another while singing

6. LEARN THE INSTRUMENTATION SOUND.
Knowing what the instrumentation sounds like helps you know when and where to come in. Don't let your church musicians 'bobo" you. 😆

7. SING ALONG:
You sing alongside with the music even if you have not or have perfected the song. Try to sing the same thing you hear in the song.

8. NOW TRY TO SING WITHOUT THE SONG:
This will help you cross-check your progress... To see how well you know the song without the song. While singing without the song, if you're doing the lead vocals feel free to own the song

9. KEEP LISTENING:
Even after scoring a song, keep on listening to it. This last listen is not like the first where you just listen to feel the song. This last listen should be very specific. You can create playlists (if the song is more than one) or the put the song on repeat.

10. FOR THE LEAD SINGER
If you are leading the song and you have a longer time to before your performance, make the song your ringtone, digest and own the song.

For Back up vocals/Background vocals

5 Things you should know

Backup singers/vocalists provide harmonic accompaniment for the lead singer. The job of a backup singer is tasking and a lot of times harder than that of the lead singer. If you are a backup singer, there are basic requirements that enhance your success in that role. We will look at five of them.

1. BASIC SKILL SET

A. Ability to learn songs quickly

As a producer, I get to see different people brought to the studio to do background vocals on tracks, and I find it really time wasting working with people who cannot learn melodies and lyrics fast enough. In a concert or church setting also, you may be required to backup for someone you have not rehearsed with. This skill is invaluable in such situations.

B. Ability to recognize and sing the correct notes

This is as important as the first. Music directors know too well the pain of trying to make a choir recognize and sing a particular note. A two-hour rehearsal or recording session could stretch far beyond that simply because a singer is not able to produce the required pitch. Precision is essential when it comes to harmony as just one note can change everything. The difference between a major chord and minor chord is the just one note-the third scale degree!

2. BLENDING

This merits a post on its own and we will deal with it later in detail, but I will outline a few things about blending here. Blending requires you to blend your voice with others without a noticeable difference in timbre. Blending is a major ingredient that separates amateur backup singing from the professional sound you hear in top records. Every voice is unique. For a solo artiste, uniqueness is key, but for the backup singer, you need to blend, become invisible, and modify your vocal to fit the required sound. There are some factors in blending:

A. Volume and Dynamics

Blending requires you to match your volume to that of others. Too high and you will overshadow others; too low and others will overshadow you. Every backup singer also needs to follow the musical dynamics of the piece. Any deviation will mess up the blend.

B. Breathing points

Breath management ability varies among individuals by reason of training and practice. Good blending requires backup singers to breathe at the same points in a musical phrase.

C. Phrasing

Sustained notes, crescendos, rests, delineation, staccato, etc., must start and end at the same time, and be observed by everyone.

3. HARMONY

As backing vocal, 95% of your job description involves singing harmonies, hence you should be at home with singing harmonies. I need to state here emphatically that you should be able to sing any harmony given to you irrespective of what voice type you are. That is of course as allowed by your vocal range.

I hear people say things like, "No, I am a soprano singer so I can't sing that alto/tenor part."

Sister, you are limiting yourself. It is annoying to me when I see three ladies backing up someone and they are all singing the melody. You ask them why, and you hear stuff like "Well, we are all soprano singers!"

Mehn! That just gets to me! It's a terrible and unprofessional excuse.

Please learn how to sing other harmonies no matter what voice part you normally sing.

Please!

Thank you.

4. FOLLOW-DO NOT LEAD

Scenario 1: A lady was leading the praise session in a church, and at some point it looked like she had run out of songs; so she signaled the musicians to play on. One of her backup singers decided to help her by raising a song. Unfortunately, just as the backup singer raised a song, the song leader raised another song –both of them started simultaneously.

The result? Chaos.

Scenario 2: The tenor backup singer for a guest artiste at a concert was busy doing ad libs at every point in the song. It was noisy. We were not sure who the song leader was between the guest artiste and his tenor singer.

You job is to be a backup. Do just that and nothing else except you are asked to by the song leader. I believe I do not need to over-flog this.

5. EXTRAS

A. Look Good

People often look at the backup singers as much they look at the song leader. So dress well and look your best. You are a major contributor to the image of the band.

B. Concentrate

I once caught a backup singer staring at people that were coming into the church during the praise session. She just zoned out. Her mouth was open and she wasn't singing.

C. Know your lyrics

The projector that you depend on will someday fail you. I've seen it happen many times. Learn your lyrics until it becomes a part of you. How will you be able to express a message that you barely know?

D. Be Professional

Do not get too excited that you forget what you are supposed to do. Do not leave your microphone because your body is pushing you to dance to the rhythm of the song. Do not just "enter the spirit" and leave those you are meant to lead. Being a backup singer is a great responsibility. Treat it as such.

The backup singer's role is crucial to the success of every band. If you are a backup singer, I need you to understand this. You are important. Your presence matters. Some singers feel that the only cool job is that of the song leader.

Wrong.

Being a backup singer helps you prepare better for a solo career by giving you a solid training .

Dear Singer/Music Minister, your voice is a music Instrument like the guitar, the saxophone, the keyboard, the violin! Stop acting like it doesn't matter until you have to sing then you begin to cough out to clear your air way.

If every Musician starts tuning their Instruments and every singer including backup/background singers when the performance/ministration is about to start imagine what everyone will sound like on stage - Oshodi market in Lagos Nigeria!

😒

Stop treating your voice like it doesn't matter.

1. Clean your airways regularly.
2. Do your breathe exercise everyday.
3. Practice your singing techniques regularly not before you are about to sing.
4. Watch and reduce whatever makes your voice crack every now and then.
5 . Stop taking anything and everything into your mouth. You are not a canal! 😷

What plans do you have to take care of your voice this week?
The world needs to hear you.
God needs to be glorified!

Yours truly

CHOIR MEMBERS HEAR THIS WELL 🌚

Don't be the weak link on your team.
1. Learn songs ahead of time.
Rehearsals are for blending of what you have learnt.

2. Don't remember you have a singing voice on Sundays or rehearsal days alone 😂. Take care of it all week and don't start complaining of bad voice on Sunday mornings.

3. Be a motivation.

4. Rehearsals are not for gisting or get together.
