Oh yes, how I loved those magic days before CD's and digital downloads and streaming hit the market! 🥳

All those hours, days, weeks, months and years I used to spend in record shops allover the Netherlands, Europe and outside of Europe whenever I was playing around as a DJ on other continents.

Yes, those days were magic and specially during the weekends when tons of DJ's and artists gathered in the record shops. 🤩

I feel glad I've witnessed those days, which all the younger generations missed. Days I will never forget and probably some of you will remember with a big smirk on your face as well. 😁

ECSTATIC DANCE WITH DJ SHAWNODESE @ 'DE LAURENTIUSKERK' - WEESP [25-06-2023] 🥳

I don't have a lot of words for this truly magic and amazing experience of playing at one of the most beautiful locations in the Netherlands and for one of the sweetest most lovely crews I met thus far.

And the dancers? They just totally went for it without any limit and it was such a wonderful thing to watch and to receive so much appreciation and so many compliments.

I can most definitely advise you to go visit this magic yoga studio (Yoga Today), which is organizing an Ecstatic Dance every last Friday of the month on this fabulous location.

And for the rest I feel the picture speak for themselves. 😉

DJ SHAWNODESE @ 'LACH JE WAKKER & EGGSTATIC' - 'ECOGEBOUW' - BUNNIK [26-05-2023 + 02-07-2023]

I totally forgot to drop this one here, but wanted to share it anyway, as this was such a fun and truly hilarious event. 😜

We started together with my good friend Marnix Lamers, who facilitated a workshop for our crew and our guests and did so in the form a laughter workshop. We almost literally fell of our chairs and had some serious stomach and belly aches & issues due to not being able to stop laughing about the most ridiculous things and even about absolutely nothing.🤪😂😆

After we had a shoft break and it was my chance to do my thing and show what being a happy Easter Egg was all about at this special Easter Eggstatic Dance. 🐣

The combination of laughing our asses to bits & pieces and dancing them once more into smithereens wil always make me remember this day as a very happy and joyful experience and it's something I most definitely advise you all to try-out sometime.

There will be 2 more editions for which I have added the other flyers as well and this will be on June the 16th with DJ Shivanne and on July the 2nd, which will be another chance for me to show my Eggstatic magic. In case you are considering coming, be sure it will most definitely leave a seriously happy and hilarious impression! 😁

I hope to see you on one of those 2 fabulous events and am looking forward to once more be your musical and dancing puppetmaster. 💃🕺

RESTORING WELL-BEING AND HEALING TRAUMA WITH ECSTATIC DANCE.

As one of the oldest forms of communication, dance has been used to convey a range of emotions, and is recognized as a part of human expression across cultures. I regularly use movement to cope with stress, so when I was introduced to ecstatic dance events, which are essentially small-scale sober raves, I was delighted.

Creative movement therapies can be useful in the treatment of depression and anxiety. Exercise alone improves mood and minimizes stress. With ancestral roots in bonding and communication, dance provides additional benefits. Ecstatic dance involves moving to music in a free manner in the absence of guidance. The ‘ecstatic’ aspect refers to spontaneous and unrestrained movement, without concern for the aesthetics of the dance. Research suggests that ecstatic dance helps freely express emotion.

In an interview with The Trauma and Mental Health Report, Tasha Bodnarchuk, a holistic counsellor, described how ecstatic dance has helped her:

“I feel that emotions can become stagnant in my body. This practice reminds me of the mind-body connection. I can truly allow whatever it is that I’m feeling to be expressed and released through movement.”

The ecstatic dance movement has three foundational principles: First, dance barefoot if possible to connect more fully with the ground. Second, dance without words to promote a meditative state, as there is no verbal instruction from facilitators during the experience. Third, dance as you are, meaning without the use of drugs, alcohol, phones, cameras, and with no expectations or judgement.

The ecstatic dance experience often begins with a brief guided meditation, and the rhythmic sounds start off gentle and slow. Participants allow their bodily movements to flow with the music as it gradually increases in pace and intensifies. After a period of high energy dance, the music slows, and participants rest briefly before gathering in a circle.

Ecstatic dance appears to have some therapeutic qualities. A study at Dublin Business School of Arts in Ireland explored the restorative effects of ecstatic dance and found that participants benefitted from it both as a form of communication and as a coping strategy. Ecstatic dance was also seen to be valuable in terms of connection, not only with others, but also by giving dancers space to connect with their own emotions.

Bodnarchuk explains:

“Tension, stress and trauma are all stored in the body, so through ecstatic dance I can release this weight I’ve been carrying. When I left my partner of 12 years, I let all those feelings out with ecstatic dance. As scary as it was, dance has been my medicine to help me through this shift in my life.”

In her earlier years, the dance experiences she had were typically fueled by alcohol and other drugs, which encouraged a sense of freedom in her movements.

“I was insecure when using alcohol as a conduit to get me into that state, but it actually didn’t help my mental state, and the environment didn’t help my mental wellbeing. Coming to an environment where I can be completely free in my expression, and not needing alcohol or drugs to get me there is truly liberating. The dance and the movement is the medicine.”

Another participant of ecstatic dance named Dan Sabau is a registered kinesiologist and massage therapist candidate who has been using movement for self-development and as a form of expression for several years. He shares:

“During my first experience with M**A at a rave, I had tasted the freedom to dance without caring what others thought. But that was fleeting, just like at the bar when I would finally be drunk enough to let loose. But to feel this free in a sober and safe space felt like a superpower because I realized I don’t need to rely on something else, whether that be drugs or alcohol, to allow myself that freedom of movement. I’m reconnecting to myself. A movement practice in the shape of ecstatic dance has truly allowed me to ground a healthy mental state.”

Research suggests that ecstatic dance, spontaneous and unrestrained movement, helps express emotion and has therapeutic qualities.

Ecstatic Dance is so much more than being sober. Than the absence of drugs & alcohol (and talking on the dancefloor).

Ecstatic Dance is a practice. A transformational experience, every time again. It is an intrinsic part of life for and of those who choose to truly (re-)connect together from their own authenticity, creativity, tenderness, love, vulnerability and playfulness.

Ecstatic Dance is the welcoming within a safe environment where everyone is showing the appropriate amount of respect to each other as fellow human beings. Where healthy community standards are the ethical foundation of these magic musical and dancing gatherings.

Ecstatic Dance is life transforming, It's somatic, energetic, ta***ic and shamanic and magic all at once. It is the culmination of loving conscious Souls being fed up with the world as it is and trying to re-create Paradise upon our beloved Mother Earth again.

I totally forgot to post my last Ecstatic Dance mix here folks. One that I mixed together last Christmas and I had so much fun doing so. 🤩

It was a while ago since I found the time and inspiration to create another Ecstatic Dance mix @ home, which in this case is a collection of favorite tunes I've been playing out over the last few months of this past year. Tunes which made so many amazing freestyle frolicking freaky dancers float like awesome angelics and bounce like bewildered baboons allover those magic Ecstatic Dancefloors in the Netherlands. 💃🕺

I have once more tried to captivate the majestic magic of Ecstatic Dance in a dance flow and journey aimed to facilitate the release of all kinds of physical, emotional and mental tension and stress, as well as dosing this blend of musical masterpieces with all kinds of delicious moments of fun, happiness and bliss. 🥳

DJ SHAWNODESE @ OZORA FESTIVAL - HUNGARY [2005] 🥳

Suddenly I popped into an old flyer of Ozora Festival. After Boom Festival, where I had the honor to play the mainstage in 2006, Ozora Festival is Europe's biggest and most well-known psytrance festival and one that has gotten numbers up to over 30.000 visitors.

Yes, I will always cherish those magic days of playing all around the world on all kinds of magic festivals, in awesome clubs or other venues and it recalls so many beautiful memories to just pop into the link of possibly the most visited goa/psytrance site in entire Europe by me and so many others; Goabase.de where I just found the link of the Ozora festival line-up of 2005:

DJ SHAWNODESE @ ECSTATIC DANCE - 'HET GROTE FIJNE FESTIVAL' - OTTERMEER [10-09-2022] 🥳

So freaks, freggles and other freewheelin' folks, here it is! 🤩

The Ecstatic Dance mix I played @ the magic 'Het Grote Fijne Festival' @ Ottermeer in the Netherlands, which was at an incredibly beautiful community in the middle of nature and created by a truly awesome conscious family.

I felt so honored to get asked to play a set here, as it's organized by the nr. 1 Ecstatic Dance promoter in our country who also organizes the Ecstatic Dance festival in the Netherlands every year, so this was not just an 'ordinary' Ecstatic Dance gig, if those exist at all.

Getting booked on such a special occasion made me dig deep in my musical pockets and I decided I really wanted to stir things up, pull tons of tricks out of my hat and give people a truly blasting festival experience....and so I did and they (or you) loved it!

It was such a blast to see such a warm, wicked and wild dancing posse bouncing around like a bunch of baboons in heat....haha! 💃🕺

They truly gave it all they got and really appreciated all my weird- and wicked humor, samples and special effects as well as my rather peculiar taste of music. Or that's at least what people keep telling me and to be honest, that makes me really happy as I'm really trying to do something totally different than most Ecstatic Dance DJ's tend to do nowadays. After all, that's what I'm me for right? 🤪

DJ SHAWNODESE - SABINE'S B-DAY BASH @ 'DE ARK VAN AVONTUUR' - ROTTERDAM [30-09-2022] 🥳

I totally forgot to post these 2 sweet video's sent to me last week. Video's which give a bit of an impression of a truly awesome sweet, magic and intimate night with a small selective group of truly beautiful and beloved music & dancing loving Souls.

This video is made in the last part of the evening, where the last Mohicans still wanted some proper b***y-slappin' before we all moved back into more calm waters. It also gives a truly beautiful impression of the amazingly beautiful 'De Ark van Avontuur'.

Some were old friends and I made some really nice new connections during this amazing night as well. A night where we celebrated a dear friend becoming 30 and it definitely was a night to remember in such beautiful ways. 😍

On top of that we celebrated the magic of Sacred Cacao, microdosing Magic Truffles, our love for Ecstatic Dance, medicinal music, each other and life upon this magic planet we all live, dance and breathe upon. 🤩

DJ SHAWNODESE @ 'HET GROTE FIJNE FESTIVAL' - OTTERMEER [10-09-2022] 🥳

Here's a first short video snippet of my DJ-set @ 'Het Grote Fijne Festival' at the truly magical and beautiful location at Ottermeer.

To be honest not just me, but all of us were rather worried about the weather, as it literally hosed down cats and dogs for the entire night before. Thank goodness my and many prayers were heard by the Weather Spirits and despite still experiencing a bit of rain, eventually the Sun 🌞 came through again and turned a wet nightmare into a beautiful blissful day for all of us. 🤩

And my set? Well, it honestly was the best and most fun & funny set I ever played. People had such an amazing time and laughed their asses off due to all kinds of funny samples and tunes I managed to throw in the mix, of which the tune on this video is just one of many examples ;)

For those who want to know, this track is made by a rather peculiar man named Thomas Benjamin Wild Esq and the track itself raised quite a few eyebrows and made people burst out in laughter quite a few times on the dancefloor. 😂

I'll update this page with some more pictures and videos of my set at the festival soon, but for the meantime this might give you a sweet 1st impression of the fun we all had during the 1st part of my DJ-set. 💃🕺

In a little less than 2 weeks from now, I'll be playing an Ecstatic Dance set at 'Het Grote Fijne Festival' @ the magnificent Ottermeer location and I feel totally stoked about it! Ottermeer is a place which I have fond memories of and which has been a place where I experienced unforgettable magic plant ceremonies that have altered the course of my life forever.
