Dr. Evelien Dirks is a senior researcher and program director of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Research and Development program of the Dutch Foundation for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Child (NSDSK) in Amsterdam the Netherlands and she is affiliated at Utrecht University. Her research focuses on the language, social-emotional, and cognitive development in deaf and hard of hearing children within the context of the parent-child interaction. During our Green Healtcare session, various speakers share their experiences with green and sustainable care. Mr Tristan Reuser is an oculoplastic and ophthalmic surgeon based in the Midlands, UK. At ESPCI he will give a historical overview of sustainability in ophthalmology and what the results are so far. We look forward to what we can learn from his experiences for our cochlear implant care.

Proudly we introduce the session called ‘Welcome to school’! Social inclusion of young CI users in their daily environments. This session will be lead by prof. dr. Carolien Rieffe. She, and Brenda Sousa da Silva, Yung-Ting Tsou, and Claudia Libbi will present studies during this session about young CI users’ social participation experiences in different education stages - preschool, primary school, and secondary school. We also show a unique multi-method approach to capture these experiences, and identify factors in CI children’s daily school environments that promote better social inclusion, taking into account individual needs and capacities.

Today we introduce prof. dr. Deniz Başkent to you! She studied Electrical Engineering at Bilkent University, Turkey, and Biomedical Engineering at University of Southern California, USA. A strong motivation for Deniz has been to improve hearing devices for children and adults with hearing loss and hearing devices, and to contribute to their quality of life. Deniz feels passionate about everything related to auditory perception and cognition, its development, its impairments, and its rehabilitation. For the latter, Deniz is exploring a range of approaches, ranging from music training to robots. On ESPCI she will lead a session about hearing loss and age effects on vocal emotion processing in children.

Proudly we introduce prof. dr. Anne-Laura van Harmelen as one of our keynote speakers! She is a professor Brain, Safety and Resilience at Leiden University, the Netherlands. She leads the research program Social Resilience and Security, an interdisciplinary program designed to contribute to greater social security for all. Anne-Laura van Harmelen's research focuses on a better understanding of the complex social, psychological and neurobiological mechanisms of risk and resilience in adolescence. Her talk at ESPCI will be about Resilience in young people.

Dr. André Goedegebure is a senior clinical and research audiologist at the department of otorhinolaryngology Erasmus MC Rotterdam. He is working in the field of cochlear implants for about fifteen years, which is one of his main research topics. He is also involved in epidemiological studies investigating age-related hearing loss (the Rotterdam Study) and hearing loss in children (Generation R). Recently he has been collaborator within the recent European EUscreen study, in which implementation of new hearing and vision screening programmes were investigated. Dr. Leen Maes is an audiologist and appointed as associate professor at the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at the Ghent University and as scientific employee at the ENT Department of the University Hospital Ghent. “Attention to sustainability is also important at a healthcare conference, because the children we are helping now with a CI must also be able to live on a healthy earth in the future!”

I am Arno Janssen and I am medical physicist – audiologist at the Radboud UMC. I received my B.Sc and M.Sc degree in Natural Science from the Radboud University, Nijmegen, The Netherlands, in 2009. In the same year I started as a Ph.D. student on the topics of transcranial magnetic stimulation and freezing of gait in Parkinson’s disease, for which I received my degree in 2016 at the Radboud University. In 2016 I started with my four-year training program to become a medical physicist - audiologist at the department of ENT at the Radboudumc. As an audiologist I work with adults and children with a CI.

My name is Robert Jan Pauw. I work as a staff otolaryngologist at the department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam the Netherlands. I am head of the otology department. I am actively involved in the development of national guidelines for the ENT Association and different research projects. As a teacher I am involved in several international courses for ear surgery.

“Thinking about ESPCI2023, I look forward to a conference that inspires and encourages thinking about innovation in CI care!”

My name is Wendy Huinck and I am a clinical scientist, head care innovation and chair of the research board Hearing & Implants at the department of Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck surgery of the Radboud UMC in Nijmegen. I am responsible for the development of the adult hearing care of the Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck surgery department and for the indication procedure of the adult cochlear implantation patients. My interest in in implantable hearing aids, specifically cochlear implants, has led to clinical work and research projects, including supervising PhD- and master students and to presentations at international meetings on cochlear implants (CI).

I am Marc van der Schroeff, I work as a staff pediatric otolaryngologist at the department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam the Netherlands. At the Sophia Children’s Hospital, Erasmus MC, I am head of the pediatric otolaryngology department and responsible for all tertiary care of pediatric otology including cholesteatoma and cochlear implants. My research focuses on acquired hearing loss in children, predominantly within a large birth cohort study, Generation R.
