Do you hit High Quality Shots?

Try to hit the ball with good height, depth and spin so it goes up at the baseline.

Otherwise, your opponent is able to hit the ball at the ideal hitting zone.

Med Ball Pullover Variations for Tennis by

We do a fair amount of pullover activities. They are mostly inspired by track & field throwing events (javelin in particular, as the overhead demands are most relatable to the tennis serve).

And that’s exactly why we perform these types of movements, for the serve (see image from a few posts back).

These are only a couple examples by and , but many others exist when it comes to MB pullover work. For instance, we can also perform them:

- with a pause, reactive or continuous

- with lighter or heavier med balls

- sub-maximally for more elastic purposes or maximally for more power

- unilaterally or bilaterally

- with a twisting action

Truthfully, you won’t find any research on this (at least not with reference to tennis). But I have been seeing the benefits, not only from a power standpoint, but also in terms of improvements in ROM and positions needed during the serve (yes, we are trying to accentuate thoracic extension and no, it’s not bad for your back).

I think we need to tackle these positions under various loading demands - because we see it in the serve (like 150 times per match) and there are lots of forces acting on various joints (and they occur in really really short time frames).

Give these variations a try!

Never be late again

Question: When and how should you prepare for a forehand/backhand?

Answer: keep your racket behind you (with racket up) around shoulder height when the ball bounces on your side.

If you do that, you are:
- no longer in trouble preparing for your shot;
- you get a correct rhythm in your stroke;
- And you get confidence in your strokes because it works.

Being prepared is 🔑.

The return is underrated

But why?
A lot of people think a return and baseline shot (forehand/backhand) is the same.
But it's not.
The return of serve is more difficult than a baseline shot because of the ball you could receive.

You have to control a more powerful shot, it's difficult to see where the ball is coming and you start from an awkward position.
Thereby, the return is the most important shot in tennis after the service.
You are lucky if your opponent hits a double fault but otherwise, you always must hit a return to win a point.
To master the return:
1. Read the serve of your opponent.
2. Make a split-step.
3. Stay in balance.
4. Don't bring your racket back too much
And much more!
Make sure you train and master the return.

One simple tip to hit the ball harder:

Use the cap of your racket.

When you almost hit, aim with your cap towards the ball.
By doing that, you force yourself to generate racket speed when hitting the ball.

There are a lot of aspects to look at for hitting the ball harder, but this one is important.

Use this opportunity!

Normally we work towards our matches/tournaments.

At the moment we are only able to train.

It's an opportunity to:
make technical corrections
improve your tactics
strengthen your mental skills
become tennis-fit.

So next time you play...
Make sure to work hard and have a plan!

Work on the right thing

You say it's your forehand that's holding you back from your next breakthrough - we say it's your mindset.

You say that you have to become stronger to hit harder - we say it's your technique.

Or it is the other way around. You say it's your technique but we would say it is your physical condition.

The point: work on the right thing (at the right time).

How: let the experts help you.

HOW TO START PLAYING AGAIN

Because of COVID-19 our body and mind aren't used to the elements of tennis.

Your rhythm is lost.
Your footwork is bad.
Your 🧠 needs to get used to the game again.
And especially the physical part is gone.
’If you don't use it, you'll lose it.’

So let's dive into the latter.

I hope you did your workouts, slept most of the time around 8 hours per night, and gave yourself the nutrition your body needs. If this is you: congrats. You did what you could do.

But if you can play again, remember that your muscles aren’t ready for 100% intensity training. Your body is maybe stronger than ever duo to strength training at home... but it's not ready for tennis.

Especially for the shoulder while serving.

What to do:
Serve at 50% of your 💪
Play not longer than 60 minutes ⌚

Take little steps and keep yourself on the court.

Your mentality is your starting point

Imagine:
You are playing tennis for about 10 years and training every week and every year you are playing in the competition with a lot of joy. You are playing tournaments in the summer.
When you are training, you are training technical and maybe sometimes tactical. You are happy and satisfied with what you learn.

Nevertheless you find out that every year there are some struggles:

-'training is going well.. but the matches won't go smooth'
- The moment I'm playing good, I make myself crazy because I'm not doing what I should do.'
- 'I'm playing against myself.' When you think about your progression over the past 10 years, where did you grow the most?

Technical, tactical, physical or mentally?

If you find out now that the order of the words above is the same order of a lot of progression to a tiny bit progression (a lot of technical progression but just a tiny bit progression at mentally).

In that case, it would be advisable to lay your focus on your mental skills. It sounds like something is wrong with you, but believe me: if that was the case, then was something wrong with every tennis player. If you recognize yourself in any of these sayings and you are curious about our online mentally training, comment on this post or send us a DM and we will stay in touch.

TACTICS: taking time away from your opponent.

Look at this point of during the

When you really want to level up your game it's all about tempo.

How quick you see and act and make the right choices.

Next time when you are in court: try these steps to take time away from your opponent.

Win more points.

Improve your game.

A clear goal vs a vague goal.

If you want a better service: vague goal.

If you want a better service heading wide with slice 7 out of 10 times you try: clear goal.

If you want to become better in 2020: vague goal.

If you want to reach one level higher in 2020: clear goal.

Make sure that you make your goals clear, then you know what you are working for. It is like a doubt between in and out, and to be a 100% sure about it.

Make sure you are focusing on the process, and make sure you getting closer to your goals step by step.

Process example: to train every Tuesday and Friday (specific training on court) where there is a focus of 10 minutes at minimal on the service heading wide with slice.
