πβοΈ Protect our waterways this Summer! πΆπΏ
As we enjoy the stunning rivers and lakes around our region this summer, letβs do our part to keep these iconic waters healthy and thriving. π±β¨
Whether youβre out boating, paddling, fishing or swimming, itβs vital to Check, Clean, Dry your gear if you move between rivers and lakes to stop the spread of invasive pests like the Invasive Clam.
The invasive freshwater clam is currently only found in a section of the Waikato River including here at Lake Karapiro. The Clam can harm everything we love about the water β disrupting our recreation, clogging water pipes, and outcompeting other species.
The clam can only spread if people move it between lakes and rivers with their boats and gear (including togs and clothing). Before you move between Lake Karapiro and other rivers and lakes....
β
Check β for what is visible. Remove any visible matter, including any plant material, mud, or clams. Drain all river or lake water.
𧽠Clean β for what is not visible. Blast your gear and craft with tap water, not into a stormwater system or drain (onto grass). For absorbent materials, clean at home with one of the approved methods.
π¨ Dry β to be sure. Allow your craft and gear to dry. First dry to touch, inside and out, then leave it to dry for at least 48 hours (2 days) before using again.
Letβs protect our rivers and lakes for generations to come!
