Today is the first day of Bowel Cancer New Zealand Bowel Cancer Awareness Month . For every spa booking this month Rent a Spa NZ will be donating $50 to Nicola's Givealittle fundraiser. This week, Nicola Petrie shared her story with the NZ Herald to encourage people to take action this coming Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.

Nicola was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer at A&E at the end of April. Her husband Andrew explains his recollection of the night, “The one thing that I remember is the doctor saying, ‘I need to go and get a chair’” before telling Nicola she has bowel cancer.”

“And then they tell you it looks incurable,” Nicola says. “Probably ‘harrowing’ is the way to describe it. Just, the world stops.”

Since then, histology showed Nicola has a BRAF gene mutation. This means she has an aggressive form of cancer that requires unfunded drugs to treat. This will cost around $60,000 - $70,000 as the drugs are yet to be funded as promised by the new National government before they were elected.
