Thank you to all the lovely people who came to Lansdowne House yesterday for our Mothers' Day lunch. We had a guest from Seattle and another gentleman from Germany here to celebrate Mothers' Day with his mother. It was a gorgeous calm and sunny day but chilly so the fire was stoked up and everyone was warm and comfortable. We had lots of wonderful compliments about the food, the fantastic staff and the ambience which only this majestic historic building can create. It was a magical Mothers' Day enjoyed by all.

Thank you also to my fantastic team - Marama who excelled in the kitchen, Lisa who works her magic front of house as well as helping in the kitchen and Christine on the bar and making sure all the guests have everything they need...and doing lots of dishes!

The next 'Open to the public' event is the mid year Christmas lunch in June...either Sunday 15 June or Sunday 29 June...the date will be confirmed this week so WATCH THIS SPACE!!

Come and join us for a relaxed and unhurried Mothers' Day lunch at Lansdowne House.

An update on 2 very special birthday celebrations...
On Saturday 18 January we hosted the very special birthday of Edith King who turned 100 yrs old. That's the first 100th birthday celebration I've hosted here in 21 plus years and it was an extraordinary day in every way. The weather was fine and sunny, the guests came from far and wide and everyone was excited to be here and to spend time with Edith and with family and friends. Marilyn, Edith's daughter organised all the guest list, follow ups and seating arrangements and together with her husband Evan, the three of us organised the format for the day and all the other details which go into making a happy and relaxed day for everyone.

Today Marilyn has sent me an email which she has tried to put in the Reviews section but has had difficulty so this is what she said...
"Our family can't thank you and your wonderful team enough for all the hard work you put into making Mum's day a very special one. I have had nothing but absolute raves about the day including the amazing spread you put on. Mum was so happy to see everyone and has even said she would do it all again.... Kind regards, Marilyn, Edith & family."

Last Saturday, the 25th January we hosted another special birthday occasion, two joint 21st birthdays for Lucy and Siena. Again it was a fine day, in fact really, really warm especially in the kitchen!! Lucy's Mum, Tracey Collis, brought 2 huge buckets of wonderful sunflowers, just gorgeous and she left some of them for me and for the staff to take home! The girls and their families really enjoyed their lunch celebration here especially as Lansdowne House holds special memories for the family! Deana and Ash were married here a few years ago and now there is a small person who also joined the family gathering. It was a lovely occasion enjoyed by all the guests.

Tracey emailed me..."Fabulous feedback on the food and venue. Everyone I spoke to loved it and thought it was a perfect function for them. There is not a single thing we would change....You are always so generous with high standards and your staff are consistently amazing - it's a hard part of hospitality now." Tracey Collis, Mayor of Tararua.

On that note I think it would be fair to say that my wonderful team and I nailed it on both occasions!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone! May I wish you all good health, every happiness, peace and joy in the year ahead. Please be kind to one another, make sure you laugh every day, stay in touch with friends and family, help those in need whenever you can and enjoy every day you are blessed with.

For all who are on holiday...I certainly hope you have better weather than we have here at the moment! It's blowing a gale with constant showers and feels more like mid winter than mid summer!! However, there is always a positive out of every negative! The grass is green again & I won't have to use the sprinklers for a few days!! Yeah!!!

There is also another lovely testimonial from Annette Morecraft who, with her mother, has been here for the last three Christmas lunches. Her mother lives locally but Annette resides in Seattle with her husband Tony. Last year Tony was able to come as well. She has posted in the 'Mentions' section as people are finding it difficult to access the 'Reviews' section. Will have to look into that!!

Thank you Annette!

Since Christmas Day I have had some lovely feedback from guests that I would like to share with you. There were two lovey older couples who came together to spend Christmas Day with us. They emailed me and are happy for me to share their comments...

"Dear Kadia,
My husband Ray and I were privileged to be part of a group who enjoyed Christmas lunch at Lansdowne House. It was our first visit to your delightful property and we left wondering why we had never been before. Not only was the food superb and plentiful we were made to feel comfortable and welcome at all times. The staff who assisted us never stopped smiling and not only met our needs but anticipated all our wants.
Thank you for making this Christmas unforgettable (we are both in our eighties) we have many Christmases to remember.
We loved meeting Jazzie, we are no longer able to have a dog of our own so doggie encounters are special.
Thank you for your kindness and hospitality, please pass on our grateful thanks to all your staff."
Barbara and Ray Stedman, Greytown.

And from Hilda Payne...
"Dear Kadia,
Just a short note but send with many, many thanks for such a wonderful Christmas spread on Christmas Day. It was such a happy occasion and full of warmth from everybody including your lovely staff.
We so enjoyed our wonderful Christmas meal and all the happy, smiling faces. Thank you for making it so special.
With our grateful thanks and every good wish for 2025,
Hilda and Robbie Payne."

Christmas greetings and blessings everyone! Jazzie and I and all of the Lansdowne House team hope that you had a joyful, happy and relaxed Christmas with your family and friends!

Lansdowne House opened for the 19th year for our Christmas Day lunch. The menu, as always, was traditional and included turkey, Champagne ham, my Gravlaxed salmon, roast and mashed potatoes, baked veg as well as a medley of greens veg and my sweetcorn soufle as well as all the condiments. Lots of canapes including a kilo of whitebait made into fritters...all devoured very quickly! Dessert, as always had the 1798 Christmas pudding plus brandy custard, strawberries, the 20 egg Pavlova, lots of bite size treats, 7 x icecreams, raspberry coulis, Caramel, chocolate Ganache and lemon curd sauces. Most were too full to have coffee and tea and Christmas mince tarts!!

This year I called all the staff out to meet the guests. I had the invaluable help of Marama and Jessy in the kitchen, however, all the rest of the staff were new to Lansdowne House and they did so well, I was truly blessed. Tracey was on the bar, Marina worked front of house and helped Tracey getting supplies from the chiller and Jessy commandeered his lovely Mum Denise and his young sister Tyler to help front of house and wherever needed! Denise did a fabulous job with the dishes and Marina was everywhere she needed to be. Marama with Jessy's help oversaw everything in the kitchen so that it all went smoothly and according to plan. Without all of these wonderful people Christmas Day would not have happened...so thank you, thank you team... it was the success it was because of you!

The guests, too, were lovely and very appreciative of the food and the wide variety of food as well as the opportunity to spend a leisurely, relaxing day at Lansdowne House, such a unique and special place in the Wairarapa. For many the highlight of their time here was the appearance on more than one occasion of the principal host here...Jazzie...who was determined to visit and spend time with every guest and to make sure we were all doing our jobs properly!! Needless to say she's a bit tired today and is snoring gently in her favourite spot!!

Now I'm into clean up mode, vac'ing & mopping etc. plus 5 x loads of washing...but also methinks I will need a few nanny naps! Lots of lovely people have given me presents...thank you! They're still under the tree and I hope to open them later!

Take care everyone especially if you're driving!!

To all Jazzie's wonderful fans out there...I just thought you'd like to know that my beloved four legged, gorgeous companion is 9 years old today!!! We've just had a quiet day together with lots of hugs and smoochies. The perfect day for her!! She's had a few treatos too and I'm about to give her dinner...another favourite part of the day for her!

9 yrs old is getting really old for a St Bernard. She has certainly slowed down and her zoomies don't last as long as they once did. However, she still goes for her daily trip down to the gates and barks at everything that moves to let the neighbourhood know that Jazzie's on patrol!! Bless her!
