Earlier this week I finally received my Bachelor of Business (Management) degree, post covid, post my 100 years of study!!! Such an awesome day, my Dad came down from Hawkes Bay, all my tamariki and mokopuna were there, it was so so spesh and a memory I will never forget.

Kākahu was gifted by my tamariki and their babies earlier in the week and I was able to put on some of the raukura that has been given to me from my Mum before she passed, and also Aunty June Jackson back in the day who has also passed - Nga Rauru represent! Dress made by our gorgeous niece Talia Soloa so cool felt like a wedding dress lol but black my fav, yellow flowers chosen by Winter because that is my fav colour, ula lole from the mokopuna to represent my Samoan side 🙂, bubbles/balloons ready for me on the day, makeup by moko Aaliyah, hair by Lagi Miti, kai by Master Kong lol. So spoilt as usual.

Dad was very emo and suffered immense teasing from me and the kids the entire evening, and he loved every moment, he even nearly had a speech which if you know him is extremely difficult for him but he did manage to stammer out that he was so proud.

I got the biggest cheer from my whānau on the day, and an even bigger solo moment from Augie telling everyone at Michael Fowler Centre that "Youre a rockstar Tracey Betham lol. Loved every moment.

Love my famz so much.
Dad Betham was there too in spirit and I thought about him prior to getting up on stage - he wouldve been there too if he was still here.

Cute pic of me and my main man.

Nau mai te Raumati me te Kirihimete!

Its time for us to take a well-deserved break with whānau over Christmas. Yessss!

Before we sign off, we just want to say ngā mihi to everyone that has supported our first year in business, for buying our kai, taking the time to share pics, and posts and spreading the word, and for providing us with feedback on TRK – we feel the aroha and support, so thank you.

The majority of the Toru Road Kai deliveries made their way out today, with the rest heading out the door tomorrow, and last ones early next week, which means that the aprons are off, and we are ready to get some serious staycation vibes happening!

If you are home this year like us, or venturing around the rohe this Kirihimete, travel safe - eat what you like, sleep late, laugh even if it is at your own expense, and spend that time with those you love that you've been hanging out all year to do. We'll be doing All of that too. We will be back open again on 17 January 2022.

Happy holidays everyone. Be good, or pretend to be. Arohanui. Tracey, August and whānau

Toi Kupu Gallery came about as a creative outlet to help heal grief whanau experience by wearing jewellery with the names of our babies and loved ones who have passed away. It was important to me that our loved ones are remembered and honored for their significant place in our lives. In memory of my daughter Anahera Janine Te Aroha Ross-Lewis.

It has also become important to have a space to make bold statements about kaupapa Māori issues. From here the Bold Statement range of Land Back and Mana Motuhake products were born.

Kawakawa products feature in my pākihi as I am from Ngati Raukawa ki te Tonga and they pay homage to our Tainui kawa of wearing Pareraukawa. It is my intention to expand into gift and homeward along with Merchandise. Nga mihi e te whanau. Nei ra te mihi mahana ki a koutou. Nā Kahurangi.

On the 6th Day of Kirihimete

Toru Road Kai brings healthy and wholesome kai to your table

Bringing people together is the key ingredient in the establishment of Toru Road and good food is the basis of this.
Toru Road Kai is a whānau-owned business based in Porirua that began post lockdown last year. Most of the kai the whānau makes is vegan (with their youngest boy having his input into that), but whether you're vegan, vegetarian, flexitarian, or an eat-all kinda person (like most of the Toru Road whānau are), all the kai is healthy, wholesome, and good for you.
Bonus is that no matter your preference everyone can sit down at the table and enjoy what’s on offer.
Where possible the whānau includes indigenous ingredients into their products. Their Kale and Kawakawa Pesto is a fav, but the Horopito Dukkah and Tahi Bay Oil is fast becoming a must have. Kai is produced in small batches so check out their website, www.toruroad.nz and see the other kai that you could be digging into too!
Enter the Toru Road Kai Kirihimete Prize Draw

If you order from their website AND join their whānau mailing list at any time over the 12 Days of Kirihimete promotion, you will go into the draw to win their Kai Platter Board Bundle which retails at just over $200.

The prize for the bundle of Toru Road Kai goods is presented on a Toi Kupu Gallery designed kai platter board and will be drawn the day after the close of the promotion and shipped out to the winner shortly after.

Thank you for supporting our pakihi & the other small businesses over this Kirihimete season!

Need to get more greens into you? This is kale that actually tastes great! The base is raw kale with sunflower seeds and the added earthiness of kawakawa/bush pesto. It’s the first of Toru Road Kai that we incorporated our own indigenous ingredient of kawakawa. A coarsely made pesto (at the request of Tracey's son Keenau to "make it more meaty" - even though he's vegan!)

A few years ago Tracey started moving into eating healthy food, trying out vegan, organic, more wholesome and more natural foods. Buying a bunch of kale was at the top of the list - that's healthy right? Not enjoying the taste of that kale made her think that she could probably eat it if it was hidden in a pesto. Kale Pesto was born and is now a staple in her household, no longer hidden it’s the forefront of our business. Toru Road Kale & Kawakawa Pesto was the beginning of the Toru Road journey for her and her whanau.

Having whanau and friends in one place over kai is always a celebration but what you might not know is that behind the scenes Toru Road Events has created some gorgeous celebrations. With an events management background, Tracey has a number of events under her belt and whilst Toru Road Kai is a new venture, Toru Road Events is integral to our kaupapa of bringing people together.

From a beautiful Chanel themed birthday party, weddings, as well as numerous corporate events each one was themed to make them super special. A Christmas party 007 Casino Night for 30 pax with welcome cocktail, chocolate coin stack favours, poker tables, and of course a roulette wheel. How about Howdy Partner Y'all invited to a Country and Western night with line-dancers, western photo backdrop, Texas bunting, and a meal fit for that shindig (think whole pig, corn, cornbread, potato salad!). We've done a drive-in movie night with drinks being served by a 1950's waitress wearing roller skates, a bar setup on a mechanics car lift, movie roll of photos on the wall, and drinks served in shiny 50's car-boots - the guest of honour was surprised that night with a Cadillac ride to the venue and the roller doors lifted to that scene, one guest even brought their movie ticket (the invite). Or what about a Kiwiana Inspired Trade Exhibition conference opening at SkyCity (think beach scenes, a cricket pitch with players actually playing cricket, Kiwiana food carts, and Kiwiana bunting), or how about the Great Gatsby themed Gala Dinner for 300 guests held at SkyCity Auckland - Tracey sought out glass globes for the centre of each table, hired the champagne tower stand from Tauranga, got gold pillars and props for the massive photo green screen, booked entertainment, and worked with the team at SkyCity so that six wait staff wore their number 1 uniforms with a white napkin over their arm at the entrance - just to make it that lil bit OTT. Any of these ideas resonate or want more inspo for your next celebration, the n give us a call or email [email protected] for ideas or inspo

Look at all these delicious locally foraged goodies, and also some organic garlic sourced from our friends at KiwiGarlic. Loves. Looking forward to trying out the Pineapple Sage (with the red flowers), smells delicious, and also the gorse flowers - will never run out of them, just dodging the prickles from the gorse was a little testing.

Today is the perfect day for a big fat kale and kawakawa pesto scone. (No butter or cheese went into the making of these beauties).
