Compostable Cups are NOT Compostable
Say WHAT..?!@#$%?
Thats right...
Event though most coffee cups available on the market today state they are compostable, they can be puting harmfull chemicals into our soils.
The team from @takeawaythrowaways have taken a deep dive into single use cups and have found out some very interesting things about why we cannot compost these said 'compostable' cups.
"Think about it - when was the last time you made a cup out of a piece of paper or cardboard and successfully poured water into it without it disintegrating before your eyes? Yes, thatโs right, never. You have never done this."
@takeawaythrowaways explain: Packaging companies that make (compostable) serviceware add stuff to the packaging (coffee cups) to make it (water resistant); water repellent, non-stick coatings and wet strength additives. This is where things start to get alarming because achieving these outcomes for serviceware may rely on one of these two thingies:
โ Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
โ Water dispersion coating/aqueous coating
Both of these additives could be adding nasty chemicals to our soils..
For this reason, here at Waste Less we dont want to take any risks with our community composting hubs - as the compost we create is going to be used to grow veggies for our community. Therefore, we do not compost any cups - meaning that unfortunatly they are going to landfill :(

All you need to do is remember to BYO keep cup when you go out - just like we now BYO bag to the supermarket - easy ! :)
