Back to the ponies! This super star is:

Montreux 🌟

Age: 9
Sire: Swiss Ace

Originally bought after a brief racing career in Southland. One of the most versatile horses at Waireka, Montreux plays with junior SUPA players and medium goal polo seamlessly. With a number of BPP prizes under her belt she has become a real front runner in the team.

Best friend in the paddock: Nobody, she prefers human company.

Special skill: Lying down to roll at will, rider or no rider.

With help from the trusty tuition of through our Waireka Polo School we have lots of alumni out there doing us proud and flying the flag for South Island players 🇳🇿

If you want to follow these guys’ lead enquire about our lessons today 📥

Starting off our player profiles with Ed who kindly does a lot of the SUPA umpiring and helps out with our coaching:

Ed Davidson
Handicap: 2
Age: 20
School: Christ’s College

Currently playing off 2 goal handicap in NZ and Australia with the majority of playing time being in Australia.

I started playing when I was roughly 10 years old then began at Christchurch Polo Club at 13/14. Never really stopped since and have built more horsepower along the way.

My most memorable school pony for me was probably my old mare Beetle who did years of SUPA with my older brother Louis and then myself.

Waireka has helped me learn the basics and then how to translate them through to playing as an amateur and professional. Also being a coach at Waireka for a few years has made me understand how important it is to bring the youth through the game.

Whilst we get ready for the season here’s a little look at the ponies and players that make Waireka special 🤍

These ponies are all superstars and manage to balance their teaching careers during the week with playing with Charlie and their owners at the weekends!

Starting off strong with the true legend that is:

Pippi ✨

The most senior member (pushing on 17 years) of the playing team at Waireka these days. Known for disliking her tail being tied up and never wanting to be caught.

Highlights: Played the NZ Open 4 times, 2 NZ team test matches and the most BPP awards on the farm.

Special talent:
Always being the last one on the truck to reserve her own private divider.

In this week's stallion/breeding feature we focus on White Robe Lodge standing stallion Raise The Flag, who has produced 84 winners with 272 wins 😍

Unplaced in his only race day start, Raise The Flag retired to respected Otago nursery White Robe Lodge in 2010, with a similar profile to the farm’s great stallions Mellay and Noble Bijou.

The progeny of the regally-bred stallion continues to make an impact on staying and jumping features in Australia. Daughter Etah James took out the Gr.1 Sydney Cup in Australia, the stallion with several stakes winners, including Etah Broadside, Yogi, Parthesia and Civil Disobedience.

There were an amazing 92 different sires recorded for South Island Thoroughbreds in polo over the past season, with “Raise The Flag” represented by the most progeny at 16 due largely to Waireka Polo Farms Charlie Wood’s enthusiasm for this breed 👏🏼

Good luck to our Seahorse Supplements Scholarship Recipient - James Reid for the last South Island SUPA Polo tournament for the season tomorrow!! 🐴 Go James! 🤩

⭐Last weekend was the final tournament of the SI SUPA (Schools & Universities Polo Association) and both Sam (on the right) and James had a fantastic day on the field. 🏇
Two years ago we teamed up with Charlie Wood from School to support young people in polo. Charlie selects the recipient of our scholarship based on an outstanding attitude, commitment to learning, team player and horsemanship.
The first Seahorse Supplements Scholarship🎓 was awarded to Sam Cochrane for the 2020/21 season and James Reid for the 2021/22 season.
Charlie got it bang on! 💥
These 2 are a couple of cracking young fella's and have proved to be very worthy receivers of the scholarship and are proof that the future for polo is very bright! 🏵
We're very proud of you both! 🤩🤩
