Welcome back old friends ๐ซถ
Anemones are starting to flower and it just feels so nice to welcome them back. It's been a minute.
This time last year we were growing these in Tasman! One year on and we are back growing in Kฤpiti once again ๐
What do you think of anemone? Are you a fan? I'd love to hear your thoughts ๐๐ผ
This one reminds us of boysenberry ripple ice cream!

I can sleep a bit easier now!
New flower bed #1 is full of very plump and very happy anemone, which are well on their way to flowering!
I did spot some flower heads whilst I was transplanting, and tonight's rain has helped settle them in. ๐ง
The race is on to get all of the new beds made, filled, and planted ready for spring ๐๐ท
What are you most excited about for spring? ๐๐ผ

Did you spot it?
The one thing that I always take to the greenhouse...A hot cuppa! That one essential 'tool' or should I say fuel ๐
The greenhouse and all the seedlings have needed some attention this week, the 'Great Wall' has been priority, so I spent the arvo in here and I must say it was lovely.
The weeks seem to be flying by! It's now winter here in NZ, the night are getting chillier, the sheepskin slippers are out and the fire will be on soon I reakon!

Let's talk phlox! ๐ธ
Nothing quite compares to this delicate, sweetly scented beauty, but it can be tricky to grow!!
First off, seeds require total darkness to germinate, so cover with a very thick layer of vermiculite, seed mix, or even an upturned seed tray.
Autumn sown or spring sown? Answer is both! Some prefer to start others in others pre spring but you could actually do two sowings to ensure continuous blooms.
Pinch or no pinch? Pinch! To get longer, stronger stems and more blooms so pinch away. ๐ค
Was this this helpful? Do you grow phlox? I'd love to know your thoughts in the comments ๐๐ผ

Here's how I plant my seedlings ๐ฑ
Whether it's in a garden bed or a pot, the technique is the same ๐๐ผ
Prepare your soil by adding compost and remove weeds to clear the area
Gently remove your seedlings from their punnets/pots, being careful not to damage the roots
Make a decent sized hole, deep enough to house your plant, pop it in, firming the soil around it
I always plant mine a little deeper so they're nice and snug and less easy to be blown around!
Give them a good watering and protect from birds/cats with netting or chicken wire
I will corale these with string to keep them upright a little later in the season
These are the scabious from our grow along, and I've planted these out now as they're large enough to handle. They will grow over winter and give me lovely long stems in spring ๐ธ
What are you planting now, and how do you protect your seedling babies? I'd love to know below ๐๐ผ

My Top 3 Spring Flowers...and why! ๐๐ผ
Tulips - Could there be a more spring-y flower? I think not! Tulips are the opitome of spring and I love growing them. Available in every colour imaginable there are some crazy forms out there too. Chill now and plant mid-end of May.๐ท
Anemone - such a delicate flower with an incredible vase life too, they're an absolute winner. Those pastel shades get me every time. Pre sprout after a period of pre-chill or plant direct after soaking (see my how to guide for tips)๐ฑ
Ranunculus - These have been off the menu here for a wee while but they're back! I'm going to do a grow along, so watch this space fellow gardeners! ๐

4 things I've learnt growing flowers
Mother Nature is boss - and boy, does she remind us of this regularly! Storms, rain, drought, navigating the weather can be tough and challenging. ๐ฆ
It's ok to start small - I wanted to grow ALL the flowers ALL the time. In my backyard, this is near on impossible. Start with the basics and add on each year. It'll save your sanity.๐ซ
Ask questions - Also do research, what conditions to certain flowers prefer? Do seeds need light/dark to germinate? Ask questions share knowledge.
Grow what you love - I learnt the hard way that growing the flowers I dislike (there aren't many but still) meant they got neglected, grow what you love and you'll thank yourself at harvest time.๐
What about you, what have you learnt growing flowers or veggies? ๐๐ผ I'd love to know below

Why do I grow flowers? ๐ค
Because I wanted to do things my way.
I wanted a florist shop on my doorstep, a job for myself, and most of all, to create an environment where I was always learning and pushing myself.
Why not just buy flowers in? I wanted a challenge. I thought I could MAYBE do it, but could I dare to dream that it would actually WORK?
If I didn't take a chance and go for it, I wouldn't be here now. I grow with the seasons, without chemicals and plastic. Why? Because I want to create beauty, not waste.
My core values haven't changed.
I'll be talking more about my business and what I have learned in the coming weeks I hope you'll find it useful.
Do you have a dream to grow flowers?
What is your why?
#smallbusiness #backyardflowerfarm #seasonalflowers #sustainablefloristry #kapiticoast
Well, I didn't see that coming! ๐ฑ
When I started my backyard flower farm 5 years ago, I never imagined I'd be here now.
Growing hundreds of flowers, planting thousands of spring bulbs, sowing many (many!) seeds, and making videos in my greenhouse to help people grow their own flowers. (Often fairly silly videos ๐)
I hope that you are picking up growing tips along the way, Im loving being able to share what I have learnt with you.
Thank you for following this journey! ๐ฅฐ

You can grow seeds in ANYTHING!! ๐
I grew spinach plants in this cupcake tray. You can do it too!!
๐๐ผ Poke drainage holes using scissors
๐๐ผ Fill with good quality seed mix
๐๐ผ If your seed is quite big like this spinach, make a hole and pop seed in, then cover
๐๐ผ Water then replace the lid to act as a greenhouse
๐๐ผ Keep somewhere light and warm
You'll need to pot these on when they outgrow their cupcake housing, then pop them into a pot or the garden, and feel good that you're now eating spinach after eating those cupcakes ๐
You do NOT need fancy or expensive seed trays and equipment to start off seeds.
What do you use? I'd love know below ๐๐ผ

I am counting the days until these breath taking flowers return โฐ๏ธ
The anemones are slowly waking from their slumber, and I can not wait to see their happy pastel faces once more ๐

Almost...
The garden just keeps going! You have to admire these flowers, dahlia and zinnia, who keep blooming away until the end.๐ผ
I'm picking every stem that I can, composting piles of stalks and leaves as I go to close the loop.๐ชฑ
With the arrival of the timber we need for the 'Great wall', I will be removing the last of the dahlias ready for digging to commence ๐

It's the simplest way to attract more bees and pollinators to your garden
Grow more flowers!!
Pop in a punnet of seedlings here and there and before you know it, you'll be the bees knees ๐
Here's my top 5 flowers you can grow/plant in autumn ๐๐ผ

Poppies - Scatter poppy seeds into your borders now and watch the happy bees visit the blooms in spring
Calendula - Easily grown from seed, they're loved by bees and as a bonus the petals are edible!
