Pls like and share as one of the entries of the Blue Mango Awars. A program that recognizes creative minds and innovative ideas in the design industry.
The Pasundayag program, adopted by the Cebu City Government through the Cebu City Tourism Commission in 2002, has been a transformative initiative since its inception in 1997. Focused on empowering street children through the arts, the program offers comprehensive training in dance, music, theater, and the cultural heritage of Cebu, including the traditional Filipino martial art of Arnis Eskrima. This multifaceted approach not only enriches the lives of the children but also promotes cultural tourism in the region.
Under the leadership of Cinbeth E. Orellano, the founder of Knapsack Productions/Dancers and Sugbo Performing Arts, the program has garnered support from various local organizations, including Junjets Productions, the Miss Cebu Charities, and renowned Cebu personalities and celebrities. A key aspect of the program’s success is the pro bono support provided by resource speakers, coaches, choreographers, and production staff, who generously volunteer their time and expertise. This commitment exemplifies strong community engagement and support, further enhancing the quality of training and performances.
The involvement of students from Knapsack Dance Studio is particularly noteworthy, as they contribute a portion of their tuition fees to help fund the program. This not only demonstrates their commitment to the initiative but also fosters a sense of solidarity and community spirit among the participants.
Pasundayag culminates in a grand recital that showcases the talents and skills developed by the participants during the annual summer workshops. These vibrant cultural shows not only highlight the artistic abilities of the children but also provide them with a platform to express themselves and share their stories. The inclusion of Arnis Eskrima in the curriculum allows participants to connect with their cultural roots while learning valuable skills in discipline and self-defense.
The program has successfully facilitated the transition of many participants into diverse career paths, including roles in non-governmental organizations, business process outsourcing, real estate, hospitality, and the restaurant industry. Beneficiaries of Pasundayag include children from various backgrounds, such as the Sisters of Mary Children in Inayawan, Good Shepherd, Sta. Rita Children, Asilo Children, Badjao Youth Community, and communities across Cebu City, including Sto. Niño, Ermita, Parian, Capitol, Banawa, Labangon, Lahug, Banilad, and Inayawan.
Overall, Pasundayag stands as a testament to the power of the arts and traditional Filipino martial arts in fostering personal growth, cultural appreciation, and community development among the youth of Cebu City. Through this initiative, the program not only nurtures talent but also instills a sense of pride and identity among participants, empowering them to pursue brighter futures. The collaborative efforts of volunteers, community members, and the dedicated students of Knapsack Dance Studio further enrich the program, making it a true reflection of collective commitment to uplifting the lives of the youth in Cebu City.
This program teaches street children dance, music, theater, and Cebu’s rich history, offering cultural workshops and vibrant shows. Many participants have gone on to thrive in NGOs, BPOs, hospitality, and more.
