The skin naturally sheds cells through a process called desquamation. Every 28-40 days, on average, a new skin cell is "born" in the stratum basale, the deepest layer of the epidermis.

The cell travels up through the epidermis until it reaches the uppermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum. Once the cell reaches this layer, it is rough, dry, flaky β€” what we consider a "dead" skin cell. Ideally, new skin cells continue to arrive at the skin's surface, pushing older cells off from beneath. This desquamation process happens over the entire body.

Our cell turnover rate (also called the cell renewal factor) changes throughout our life. Babies and young children have a faster cell turnover rate because they're growing quickly. That explains why little kids have such bright, soft, luminous-looking skinβ€”their cell turnover rate is twice as fast as adults. They always have new skin cells on the surface. As we age, our cell turnover rate slows down. That's why our skin never looks quite as "bright" as it did when we were younger.

Cell turnover isn't as efficient in people with acne. In those with acne, the natural desquamation process goes awry. Acne-prone skin produces more dead skin cells than is typical, and these cells aren't properly shed. This condition is called retention hyperkeratosis.

In normal functioning skin, excess dead skin cells are constantly being sloughed away naturally. In acne-prone skin, dead cells remain stuck on the skin's surface and within the follicle, creating a clog (impaction). This plug of cellular debris and excess oil forms a blackhead or, if bacteria invade, an inflamed blemish.

Successfully treating acne is tricky, but I'm here to help. Below, I detail the simple habits and tweaks that can make your acne products work better.

1. You expect instant results
Acne treatments require patience. It's a big ask, considering acne is frustrating AF, but it is absolutely necessary. The skin has a cycle, just like the moon. It varies depending on the person and gets longer as you age, but this cell turnover cycle is critical when it comes to acne! Many breakouts that you see on the face began in the deeper layers of the skin long before you could see them. Typically, you want to give acne treatments four to six weeks to show results. Clearing can take even longer, about two to three months.

2. You keep switching it up
Using too many different products all at once or adding a new product to your existing routine every couple of days can exacerbate acne by irritating your skin. When it comes to acne, keep it simple, and don't add new products too frequently, especially if you haven't given the first active product enough time to work!

3. You're going at from the wrong angle
A few different things can cause acne. In most people, it's a combination of a few factors. Not all acne treatment products will work for everyone. Work with a professional to identify the underlying causes rather than just taking a trial and error approach. This way the correct products can be recommended.

4. You're overdoing it
When you have acne, your skin is compromised, meaning it's not functioning like normal, healthy skin. It's critical that your acne treatments respect your natural skin barrier and encourage its repair, as that will ensure that your skin can heal properly from the acne. This means not over-cleansing, over-exfoliating, and over-treating.

5. You're only treating active breakouts
This is like fixing a leak once it appears, rather than making sure your plumbing is sound. Use your acne treatments on your full face, unless a product is specifically a spot treatment or you NEVER break out in certain areas. Don't just treat active lesions.

Your face oil is not hydrating your skin.

Hydration is defined as the process of causing something to absorb water. Hydration in skincare means applying water or water-binding ingredients to your skin
Oil is devoid of water and is certainly not adding or attracting it to your skin or hair.

Oils are part of the moisturizing process. While oils can condition the skin and hair, they only retain water content β€” not add it β€” which means they are moisturizing but not hydrating.

One of the ways oils moisturize is by serving as an occlusive to help lock moisture in. They can also work as emollients to help skin feel smoother and seal in hydration - assuming that the skin is already hydrated before the oil is applied.

Oils behave differently than cream and lotion moisturizers, which typically contain both oils and hydrating ingredients (like glycerin and hyaluronic acid) together in a single formula. Traditional moisturizers pe*****te through the outer layers of the skin and function to improve skin hydration by drawing in water and by creating a barrier that decreases water loss through the skin surface. Although oils also act as a barrier, they stay on the surface of the skin.

In order to get both hydration and moisturization, you can't use just an oil. I recommend pairing your favourite oils over your hydrating serums and creams.
