History of Shadow Boxes
Shadow boxes were originally simple boxes in which British sailors retiring from shipboard service used to carry and protect their belongings ashore. According to superstitions, if the sailor's shadow touched shore before he set foot upon it, he would suffer ill luck. This superstition extended to a sailor's personal items, including medals and awards which constituted a 'shadow' of sorts.
Artist Joseph Cornell's idea of Shadow boxes — or “memory boxes” which he also called — "poetic theater" took the form of glass-fronted boxes containing found objects and collaged elements arranged in enigmatic, often poetic juxtaposition.
The Modern Shadow Box
Also known as a glass-enclosed display case, shadow boxes are made to protect historic memorabilia, awards, art, sentimental objects, precious heirlooms, and keepsakes.
Things that are considered to be personal "treasures". Just like our memories that are worth keeping.
