Let us welcome the moon with music!
Full-moon festivals are held lavishly across Asia, an event celebrating life with family and good times. Mid-autumn festivals from East Asia influenced various cultures, as evidenced by the abundance of lantern festivals and parties in China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Bali and more.
The UP College of Music is hosting our own UP Diliman moon-viewing concert, a night of fun music, friends, and food. Coming this Tuesday, April 23, 2024, the Department of Musicology College of Music presents Buwan ang Tanglaw: An Asian Music Concert Under the Full Moon.
Buwan Ang Tanglaw is top-billed by the resident performing group of the Musicology Department, the UP Tugtugang Musika Asyatika, or UP TUGMA. Since the group’s creation in 2007 under the leadership of Dr. LaVerne David C. de la Peña, the group has performed on various stages within UP, across the country, and abroad, representing not just the university, but also our indigenous cultures from Northern to Southern Philippines. UP Tugma specializes in performing communal Cordillera music and the multi-layered sonos of the kulintangan from the South. They also are adept at various music expressions from Asia, which will also be featured in the concert, including the mesmerizing Javanese Gamelan of Indonesia and the meditative Koto of Japan.
The Padayon Rondalla will also be performing at the concert, bringing with them a selection of folk songs and art songs from the landscape of the lowland Philippines. The Padayon Rondalla performs not only traditional music, but they have actively been performing contemporary works and arrangements. Padayon and Tugma will be joined by dancers Sarah Maria Samaniego and Gebvelle Selga.
Special guest performers include the Guru Jina Rajkumari Ensemble from Assam, India, performing traditional music and dance. The lineup also features the Mahasarakham University Cultural Group from Kham Riang, Thailand, who will be performing Isan Folk music from Northeastern Thailand.
There will be chairs for the audience, but please feel free to bring your water bottles, picnic gear and banig. Don’t forget to slather on some mosquito repellent, and invite your friends to this special concert of colorful cultures from Asia. The concert is free and open to the public.
