Imagine if beams of light could be put to work and made to move objects. That was laureate Arthur Ashkin’s dream. Ashkin created a light trap, which became known as optical tweezers. His tweezers use laser light to grab, turn, push and pull tiny particles like atoms and molecules – without touching the objects being investigated.

In many laboratories, laser tweezers are therefore standard equipment for studying biological processes, such as individual proteins, molecular motors, DNA or the inner life of cells.

Ashkin was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery. He was 96 when he was awarded the prize: https://bit.ly/2Dzglcj
